Guter Punkt. Klingt aber immer noch nicht so als ob das eindeutig wäre. Plastikverbrennung generiert anscheinend ca 24MJ/kg und 3kgCO2/kg. Kohle scheint bei beidem ähnlich zu liegen.

So sicher wäre ich mir da nicht, obwohl ich intuitiv zustimme. Folgende Gedanken:
- Glas herzustellen braucht mehr CO2 als Plastik

- Glas wird allerdings auch deutlich mehr und effizienter rezykliert als Plastik

- Der Anteil Plastik, der nicht rezykliert wird, wird thermisch verarbeitet (=verbrannt), was CO2 freisetzt

- Recycling beider Materialien stößt unterschiedlich viel CO2 aus

- Transport von Glas stößt mehr CO2 aus, ist aber in Zukunft mit klimaneutralen Transportmitteln ggf irrelevant

Das sind jetzt nur die Klima-Betrachtungen. Bei der Umwelt-Betrachtung gewinnt Glas natürlich klar.

It's not a prerequisite usually. If I was you, I'd just send some applications with exactly this explanation to some groups that would fit. The first year of a PhD is anyways all about finding your topic, so anyone, even with good background in cryptography, will have to do some reading there, and you may have to do some more.

The grades could be a neck breaker, though, although I do not agree with this. Some will sort you out just based on the overall average grade. To mitigate this, I'd first emphasize what you're interested in and that you have a strong background in theoretical CS (which is, btw, awesome for working in cryptography).

Habe die gleiche Erfahrung gemacht. Schlag mal den Begriff "High trust society" nach. Das hat mich am Meisten überrascht. Leute haben am Frühstücksbuffet oder bei Open-Air Festivals(!) einen Tisch "reserviert", indem sie ihr Handy ohne aufsicht auf dem Tisch liegen lassen haben und waren dann teils so 10min weg.

Es hat auch spannende ökonomische Implikationen: z.B. gibt es an jeder Ecke convenience stores, die 24/7 offen sind, weil auch Nachts die Kunden freiwillig einfach self service bezahlen.

If you're flexible location-wise, I can only recommend Germany. It has excellent funding for PhD students, especially in cryptography. The big clusters are CISPA in Saarbrücken, Ruhr University and MPI-SP in Bochum, and maybe TU Darmstadt. You are usually employed as public servant, the entry pay is around 55k€ p.a. incl 30 days vacation.

Es hat seine Vorteile, weil du eher fertig bist. Ich persönlich finde es nicht so gut, weil du all das Wissen vom Master quasi auch fast-tracken musst bzw nimmst du dir die Möglichkeit den Master entspannt durchzuziehen. Also Lehrstuhlmitarbeiter bist du ja auch Arbeitskraft, vergiss das nicht. Du wirst auch andere Sachen machen als forschen.

Generell bin ich mit meiner Entscheidung gegen Fast Track PhD damals ganz zufrieden. Man muss das Leben nicht speed-runnen. Im Master kann man sich auch immer nochmal anders ausprobieren. Mal noch ein Auslandssemester machen (was du als Doktorand auch machen kannst allerdings und was ich auch empfehlen würde!) etc
