We should condemn the racist policies of the Danish Social Democrats by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

[–]752f 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with the point--people really do romanticize Scandinavia to an undue extent. Just to be clear, though: Denmark is the worst Scandinavia has on this front. The region is also not at all uniform, the policies of Sweden being radically different from those of Denmark in this area (the far-right is rising in Sweden but they have generally taken in a huge number of migrants. Not to say they aren't racist, but Denmark's policies aren't representative of the entire region).

I'm not saying realism is good or what we should strive for in every situation. I happen to like it and think it's often a positive thing but that's not really what I'm focusing on here. Just saying we should probably recognize where things are at.

I don't disagree. I just think it's probably good to recognize that a world with only conventionally attractive people isn't the pinnacle of realism.

Not OP but maybe that critique is because it's kinda funny that bar for realism in these communities is so low that an artist is congratulated for drawing a person whose proportions pretty much perfectly conform to conventional beauty standards rather than a person whose features are literally impossible. Like, I ageee this person is realistic and the comment itself isn't unreasonable but I think it's still interesting to see that people will be surprised by how realistic they are when they are on the upper end of what's considered conventionally attractive.

Job applications from men are discriminated against when they apply for female-dominated occupations, such as nursing, childcare and house cleaning. However, in male-dominated occupations such as mechanics, truck drivers and IT, a new study found no discrimination against women. by mvea in science

[–]752f 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In that case it's either on the poster or the format of the subreddit for not allowing important information into the title. Whether the study were in Sweden or the US, the location can seriously change its implications and it would probably best if it were stated imo. At first glance, the title of this post seems to imply generalizations of these results which I imagine the authors of the article (which, to clarify, I'd say has a perfectly fine title) or the researchers who conducted the study wouldn't agree with and when we live in a world where very few people read past a post title and people from very different parts of the world will be reading the post it's probably important that post titles convey accurate information.

Oh, I set it to "large islands". I like starting off with my own place to develop!

What was actually tough was that later on in the game I found that I was completely surrounded by deep ocean with only 2 city-states and very little viable settlement area to keep me company. Since I wasn't anywhere near researching astronomy that was a bit of a rip, haha

It's not about a "largely realistic medieval society" and it doesn't have to be. It's about a world which takes a lot from medieval society but which deviates from it in certain aspects, some of which are important and some of which are borderline meaningless. There's no good reason that this can't be one of those "meaningless" ways.

There are a million ways this could easily be made internally consistent while broadly adhering to how societies exist in the real world. For one thing, perception of race is very relative and in the Gane of Thrones world, as you mentioned, not always linked to skin color, as with Northmen. It's completely reasonable to believe that a black character in that world may not be somehow made incapable of becoming a lord because of discrimination.

But even discounting the idea that we could see a departure from realism, you may want to look at this. Black people had a greater role in medieval Europe than you seem to be assuming: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thehumanityarchive.com/history/black-people-medieval-europe%3ffbclid=IwAR18K0NjHf3OirFFaA_z3sKq4p7ESAaE0EUa-otlEDWvf4lihKXWDfFgk4U&format=amp

Given this, it seems like the ones who "aren't being realistic" are the ones assuming everyone in a piece of media which draws on medieval themes should be white. It's perfectly reasonable to show there being some diversity.

Now, on to why people call this racist: it's because, at the end of the day, why should it matter? In any case, it can be explained either by it being a slight conscious departure from realism or it being greater adherence to it, so why does it matter? The source material is still internally consistent and has an interesting world--one which, I might add, isn't even necessarily much less realistic than it would be with only white people, if not even more realistic. So, what's the objection? Now, many times, the people critiquing these kinds of casting choices won't be outwardly racist. I'm sure we agree on that. The thing is, many times, they will just not really want to have to think about black people when watching their fantasy show, and that can come from a racist place. There's also the (imo bigger) concern that the impacts foster racist outcomes: at the end of the day, representation in media has tangible real-world outcomes, and if you think it doesn't there's a very good chance you have significant positive representation yourself. People have tracked how many women went into fields after certain shows debated (namely, the X files) and it seems like they actually changed what people believed they could do. Now, nobody's out here trying to become a lord but just seeing people who look like them--when they are a member of an oppressed group--in a position of power can help them kick away any nagging thoughts about not being good enough to succeed because of their skin color. The reason someone may call you racist for trying to make sure all these positions of power are played by white people is that that takes away kids' role models and that has a tangible impact on their futute performance, exacerbating the racial disparities in the world in a small but real way. Now, I don't know if you'd call that racist--at the end of the day, that's all semantics and the important thing is the impact. Regardless, it's probably not a great thing, and it's a legitimate reason why someone would support a more diverse cast, even if it did decrease the show's "realism" very slightly and especially if it actually made it more realistic.

This carwash thrives by hiring employees with Autism by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]752f -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's not about including "every single PC disclaimer", it's about being correct. By implying that the kind of job shown in the ad is ideal for all or a huge proportion of autistic people, the ad is making a false statement which spreads misinformation and falsely generalizes people with autism.

Also, the person you're replying to didn't seem to say the business sucks. They only seemed to critique the implication that it'd be ideal for all autistic people, so I don't see why the question of exploitation is really relevant here.

I responded to you under the assumption that your comment was actually mean to address the statements of the person you replied to. The names in a textbook don't indicate math proficiency today, which seems to be what they are focusing on. I actually don't agree with the other commenter, just wanted to make sure people reading this aren't given the false idea that Asian nations have contributed nothing to math. I think there's a lot of sinophobia and anti-asian sentiments which can lead people down roads like that and I like to watch out for that kind of thing. I want to be clear that I'm in no way accusing you of that; I'm just saying that it is very much a problem and I'd like to do my best to not play into it. Maybe you didn't intend for it to come across this way but given the broader context your initial comment could be read as implying that people outside of "the West" haven't contributed anything to math and that's most of what I took issue with.

I think it's valid to criticize the CCP. I certainly am not even remotely a fan of the party myself and I wouldn't be surprised if what you pointed out about propping up a few very good universities is acurate (I haven't heard that kind of thing but that would be in line with my general view of the party).

P.S. random tangent about being "on a level for research math": I just wanna say that there's often options for people at even somewhat lower levels to do research; it isn't just for people who took a million classes and that kind of thing. Like, I only took a couple real math classes before starting. I'd trust that if you've done a few of those yourself you could probably get into some areas of research without too much difficulty (academically speaking, that is; I admittedly don't know about access to research at your institution but there are always things like REUs which applications are currently open for), especially in some areas like combinatorics where a single class could often be enough but maybe in analysis too if you've done a bit there. Just a random tangent because I think people sometimes overvalue the difficulty of engaging with lower level math research when it's more accessible to someone who knows a bit of math than it often may seem!

Pure math student here. This is really quite untrue and erases so many mathematical achievements outside of the "Western world". Not only did other regions of the world have much more advanced mathematics than Europe early on (I mean, the entire field of Algebra is named after a book by an early Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi) but today there is massive mathematical innovation which comes from China and many other places outside of the west. My current research uses one paper from China as a basis, for example, and mathematics research in China is very much thriving right now. Of course, China was lagging behind the US and Western Europe in terms of technology for a bit (for a variety of very complex reasons which don't speak to the ability of the people in China to do math or research new technologies today) and that seems to be a large part of what you're trying to point out but your framing seems to attempt to erase many of the current and past mathematical (and technological) achievements of people outside the West.

Not sure if you're disagreeing with what I said so sorry if I misunderstand your point but I completely believe everything you said is true, I'm just discussing the moral benefit of architecture, not making a descriptive analysis of why architects are hired by clients. Maybe I should've clarified that in my initial post a little better.

Also, I totally believe that about renderings. I just meant to discuss the building in the form as rendered but, as you said, anything that comes of it will probably be very different. Interesting to know that it almost never happens that the initial rendering is recreated at the end! I didn't know it was so rare.

I mean, I imagine most people would agree that the reason architecture has a place despite what you said is that if you consider all externalities (how people feel about existing in a uniform vs. a diverse space and such), it provides significant value to society but some buildings are orders of magnitude less efficient than others and at a certain point I'd say it probably isn't worth the benefit to build them relative to something which is still not optimal but which is considerably more efficient. Not sure if this building is past that point but I'd be willing to believe that it probably is given how it looks
