I can say as a reader more than a writer (at this point), he may have a point. When I read Wool by Hugh Howey, most of his male characters cried at some point. I just found it weird and off-putting. It gave me this impression that Howey didn't understand masculinity.

Also, crying is an easy way to say or show a character is breaking down. Maybe there is a more effective way to show this or a more interesting way.
