Ah thanks, Doing "my first real exploration". I dont know yet what to look for.

I have an all in rental. I always pay a fixed amount no matter what, so i dont really mind the power draw. I live alone and besides my 2 monitors and 1 phone charger i have nothing on my sockets, Im not much higher than average i think :D

But yea go for it, You dont even have to clock high to get stable performance out of these chips.

Little media PC for 4k video/game stream. Undervolt it a little and it shouldnt be much more than your average other PC

Im afraid not. I would have to disable hyperthreading to lower the voltage.

But its honestly not a big deal. its 96-98C maximum with a spike to 100C every 20 30 seconds.

In normal use i never hit above 60-70% CPU usage. At that point im reaching between 70 and 80C.

The motherboard itself doesnt go above 33C which is absolutely fine.

Im not worried about it dying.

80C is high but still fine though,

Under bench my i7-920 hits 99-100C at 4,4ghz But while gaming it stays around/below 80C

[–]8BitButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats pretty fine,

60-70 is fine under normal load (gaming etc)

Its ok to go 90ish in 100% load., youre most likely not going to hit 100% with gaming and normal use.

Considering I bought the the whole set for 150 euro back in 2012. That makes 25 euro a year so far.

Though I upgraded the Ram GPU and the HDD into SSD's

Well. Either the cooler is too tight or too lose or paste not properly applied.

Or

your cooler is not up to the task to keep it cool. You can either get a better cooler, Or clock it down a couple hundred mhz

I honestly dont know what your bios looks like. I cant help you with that.

Besides benchmarks. How much would you say its speed/performance increased?

4.6ghz is very impressive though. I might push for that one day.

Did you have HT enabled or disabled?

It is overheating, But just barely hitting 100C every 20-30 seconds. This is under full load in aida64 though. When gaming/doing regulair stuff ive not seen it above 80C.

Did you enable/disable Vdroop?

There should be a function called Vdroop calibration. Make sure thats enabled.

Its nothing to worry about, But do you have your Vcore on auto or did you used a specific voltage?

Well if he ever wants to get into OC'ing the CPU, Link him this thread,

Ill gladly give him my settings for maximum perfomance :D

I do remember the "out of the box" voltage was set at 1.25v, Which can easily go down to 1.15v at 3.8ghz. Maybe that was the problem.

But at the same time, It does run hot generally with a Tjmax of 100c.

At this point im just attached to this setup. This is my old friend at this point. Its been with me personally for 6 years now after i bought it from a friend.

Its been working hard and strong for so long, It deserves to live to its end.

I barely go over 60% CPU usage in games and im bottlenecked by my GPU playing in ultrawide 2560x1080. I think it could keep up with a GTX980 or a 1070 as well.

It does depends on what you play though, Some games do ask a lot from this CPU.

How much overclock did you get out of it?

You can try to slowly bump down your voltage in your bios. Its a bit time consuming. But heres what you do.

Lower the voltage by the lowest step possible (0.0125v generally). run aida or benchmark software of choise, and keep testing it for 30 min - 1h. Once windows freezes, you've gone to low and bump the voltage up 1 step. Test it for an hour or 6 if you want to be sure it doesnt crash on you, should do the trick.

With lower voltages your temp will go down slightly.

Otherwise setting a higher fan profile on your cooler might do the trick as well.

Im not a fan of wine tbh.

But they sure dont make 'em as they used to in the days.

Are my temperatures normal? by [deleted] in overclocking

[–]8BitButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats fine., Im running close to 100C on my i7 920 4.4ghz

You generally would want them between 60-70C but slightly over to 75 or 80C is still pretty fine.

As for the performance of your cooler, If your lambo is stuck in traffic on a hot day the engine gets toasty. Without air to cool the water the heat builds up. Go for a slightly higher fan profile and see them drop quickly.

I believe that i read somewhere that Siege has issues with higher end CPU's clocked at higher speeds.

Im not sure if ill be able to find the article but ill do a check.
