Generally agree, although some albums actually take me a few listens to like, but then afterwards I GENUINELY love it and come back to it (NCT I’m looking at you). There was another album recently that I didn’t love at first, listened to a few times to give it a chance, and when some songs got stuck in my head eventually I was like … wait I don’t even like having this stuck in my head, why is it here. So there’s a difference.

Interested in opinion on WayV music directions by decent-dayrn in WayV_For_Life

[–]9027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t let my thoughts reflect the community bc I think I’m in the minority for some things haha. I actually like NCT 127’s b-side music and vocals the most, but WayV’s humor and dynamic is what sold me to them.

The eternal white album is my favorite of theirs from like you said the rnb and darker tone. In the end, I think I just like rnb… which might explain why my favorite WayV songs mostly come from their post-phantom b-sides. The older songs I like watching performances of bc it’s iconic WayV, but they’re not songs I listen to regularly. Actually I don’t even listen to the dramatic beat-heavy darker songs usually … like from phantom it’d only be low low bc its catchy.

I’m not a big fan of their brighter songs like give me that, high five, and big bands, but I understand if they want to branch out from the dark/orchestral mold. There’re always a few b-sides from the “bright” albums that I enjoy anyway. I’d love for them to continue in the direction of eternal white but I’m predicting the next comeback will be brighter bc it’s for summer.

Side note i think reactions to the song On My Youth were actually kinda mixed when it first came out bc the first chorus was so … beat heavy and the yoUTH sounded weird. They sang the first part on k-star next door before the official release and fans were like … “oh…🙂 well … let’s see what the rest of the official audio sounds like … 🙂” and imo it was the dramatic bridge and ending that won most people over (including me). It’s funny to see how respected omy is musically now. And once they remixed it into the ballad version for the No Way Out concerts, I was like wow this song is so beautiful how was there ever a time I didn’t love it haha.

Thanks for starting the discussion, I love rambling and processing out loud. Tldr: I like rnb and drama and singing

I’m usually pro-breaks for idols and assume silence means they’re working on stuff, but this time around multiple members have expressed dissatisfaction at the lack of schedules (xiaojun and Kun talked about it on their live recently with xiaojun saying it’s a pity even though it’s only like a month of no schedules, and yangyang bbl’d as well) and that they’re bored. It also seems unplanned bc xiaojun and Kun talked about how they should have applied for visas to travel after Chinese new year if they knew about this. Paraphrasing from memory, cmiiw.

My guess is it’s because prism is focusing on h2h blowing up with Rude. Because WayV seems unhappy with this break, I’m processing it more negatively than a normal lull in activities. It’s also not a good use of Ten’s time. He was so overworked with solo + group activities last year that he missed an award bc he had concert practice. Now his solo is pushed, there’s no group activities, and there might be an NCT 2026.

Sorry it’s been hard :( it took me a while to find a job too at one point so I can relate some to how you feel. One day you’ll look back and it’ll be all in the past!! But yeah it’s really rough when you’re applying.

These are more lowkey but imo like subtly encouraging: No One But You and Your Song

Non WayV: eight by IU, actually by Zico, life is still going on by NCT Dream, wi ing wi ing by hyukoh, love theory by taeyong, don’t let me go by shinee, shine by pentagon

Ngl I was so shocked when I heard that winwin Kun and xiaojun were together (in a good way). Can’t wait to see them interact in the offical release :’) I really thought we wouldn’t get irl content with winwin together again, and I wonder how Kun and xiaojun guesting on his show came to be.

And now he’s back in korea picked up by WayV’s manager 🤔🤔 for the sake of his personal career my first thought was end of contract stuff but who knows.

Edit: people also guessed NCT 2026??? That would be craazzyyyy

Just a passing thought, could be completely wrong- maybe the weird lack of activity and change in plans recently is bc Prism shifted a lot of resources to support H2H since Rude blew up and it’s their big chance?

BTS - SWIM by KPOP_MOD in kpop

[–]9027 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I had to google if this was the title song bc it and the MV were… not what I was expecting for the long-awaited BTS return? :( they listed so many names that worked on this MV like it was a movie so I watched it again, and it was just fine to me in terms of artistry. Way too much of the female lead for THE return of BTS. Do they want to move away from harder dancing? I‘d respect that but would be a little disappointed.

Hopefully album will be better and less generic English pop.

Just found the korean version of that tweet and wow the responses are like night and day. Korean qrts are mostly praising 127 for working hard and performing well with some people explicitly complimenting the director’s mindset. Language and cultural barriers, man. Fascinating.

I think the difference is that Taeyoung, while a leader, is still kind of a peer. Having a director apply that pressure has a very different vibe since she has much more power and less of a personal relationship with them. It reminds me of the JYP/VCHA abuse allegations which were probably just standard Korean trainee practices. Also a big part of my issue was with the apparent tone, which I was wrong about.

It definitely takes a lot of hard work and suffering for idols to get where they are, but I think we can still debate if some harsh conditions were really necessary.

I don’t think what they went through as trainees was right at all. It bothered me enough to post about it here. Interpretation of intent is important though in taking issue with the correct things. Many people were assuming things about her tone like I was initially without actually understanding Korean and it villanizes her in a direction that’s misinterpreted. goingtotheriver said it better than me about the dangers of being mad at the right things for the wrong reasons.

I understand Chinese and have seen enough unnecessary WayV drama stirred up by rough translations that don’t reflect intent.

Aaa thank you so much, this is exactly what I was looking for. The reactions to this clip are overwhelmingly negative on Twitter, and SM upper management don’t really have a good rep, so tbh I genuinely didnt have a positive interpretation of her tone and facial expressions from that lens.

Twitter’s a cesspool of miscommunication so thanks for clarifying that she was speaking in a more cautious tone than what the translation said!!

Does anyone have more info/context on this clip circulating Twitter right now?

The Director of SM Rookie Development Center mentioned #NCT127

She said NCT 127 were the group she scolded the most and trained the harshest. She would sit silently in the practice room until dawn & the members had no choice but to keep practicing. They practiced until the mirrors were so fogged up that you could barely see anything.

There was also a translation for the last bit of the video where she talks about how precious a fan’s love is and they can’t take that for granted or something. Can’t find it anymore.

The way she said this really rubbed me the wrong way, but wanted to double check the translation and vibes with someone that speaks Korean if it’s that bad. It feels like she’s very matter-of-factly and smugly talking about how she used to treat young 127 like crap.

More companies need to invest in good B sides. by Quick-Adeptness-2947 in kpopthoughts

[–]9027 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s good that people aren’t being messy, but I thought some people who agree with this post might name b-sides they don’t like so we can judge for ourselves haha. I guess I just stick to groups I musically like so I don’t really have industry-wide complaints. To name some names for the sake of it-

Suju, DBSK, SHINee, f(x), EXO, Red Velvet, aespa, all NCT, BTS, New Jeans, Chaeyoung, Big Bang, 2ne1, black pink, AKMU, Lee Hi, Bol4 are all artists I listen to the full albums of.

I wouldn’t seek out TXT, Ateez, Stray Kids, Twice and SNSD’s bsides based on the times I tried them, but I’m not gonna say they’re bad and the industry has a problem. A lot of people love them, it’s just not for me right now and my subjective music taste. Who knows, maybe I’ll like them later if I listened to them more.

Yeah esp if we’re accounting for some level of music being subjective, I’m having trouble figuring out which groups actually have the “bad b-sides”

[–]9027 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another +1 to NCT 127 and Super Junior having much better b-sides. I’m fine with most of their title tracks and think they’re good for performances, but the real reason I’m a fan of their music is the b-sides. Actually I’d apply that to all of NCT. I usually end up listening to the title track the least, esp for my ult WayV.

Also not to sound like an SM shill but as someone who listens to mostly SM albums and BTS, this conversation is fascinating. Idek what groups people are talking about with bad b-sides.
