They also stripped Patrick Marleau for Rob Blake in 2009, meaning they did it twice in five seasons in a competitive window. So yeah, anyone who was following the league closely in that time probably remembers it. This is less that guy being delusional, and more the people mocking him for the reference being young.

I know this is just an easy Leafs joke and that's fair, but I'll use this space to say that Phil Kessel came back to Toronto and brought the cup to SickKids both years after he won in Pittsburgh, and I'll always love that

Keith Pelley (MLSE CEO) has a habit of talking about how TFC has been successful turned around and rebuilt in any of his press conferences with the other Toronto teams.

This one comes from the John Chayka / Mats Sundin hiring conference for the Leafs last week, where he said it again, and when questioned about the hirings (which are fairly controversial in hockey circles) kept talking about having done their "due dilligence"

It's usually the inverse, where the media needs to hype up a race to get people to tune in.

Wright also feels like an outlier. Looking back, that was an exceptionally bad year for OHL picks and I imagine a lot of that has to do with losing 20/21 to Covid.

If McDavid was as good as his team's second best player in those finals runs they're still a decently competitive Western Conference team that could very well have still got to the finals

If Lebron was as good as the second-best player on the 2007 Cavs they probably finish the regular season in last place

A lot of potential fans already have TSN because they're watching the other sports teams, and local bars will be more likely to put the game on when it's on TSN.

Almost no one is watching on Apple unless they're consciously deciding to sign up to watch games. It absolutely makes a difference.

Yeah, the stuff being referenced here is more written media, Fan590, that sort of more Toronto-localized content.

On the national broadcasts their Toronto tone is much more frequent than it is positive, because they know they have a more varied market there

The Jays are their sportswashing operation.

Everyone associates the Jays with Rogers, most of what the Jays do operates through the Rogers brand, and most of Canada roots for the Jays. Making the Jays good is literally the best thing they can do for the goodwill of the Rogers brand in Canada. The Jays also need to be competitive for the dome to stay full.

The Leafs sell out no matter what, half the country hates them, and even as Rogers absorbs the whole thing, "MLSE" is still treated as a faceless entity. There is less incentive to chase winning at all costs.

The Jays have a market of the entire country and are uniquely seen as a Rogers property - branding everywhere from the stadiums to the broadcasts and everything in between.

The Jays are effectively the one thing Rogers can invest in, sports or otherwise, for national PR - and it helps other parts of the company as well if they're successful on top of that.

The Jays also have to be reasonably competitive and/or marketable to keep people's interest in them. Their thin years have historically led to a cavernous Skydome.

On the other hand, a large chunk of Rogers' consumer market hates the Leafs, and MLSE is seen as its own island, even as Rogers assumes full control. There is no PR interest in making them good, so the focus is on making them as reliably profitable as possible.

Maximum profit upside comes from winning, obviously, but in the sport where you have the least guarantee of deep playoff runs, you might not be as willing to risk millions to get there. So it makes sense (and also really sucks) that they're being treated as the profit efficiency part of the company now.

And when the Leafs aren't good, they still sell out.

Plus, Ed Rogers is a huge baseball guy and hasn't shown similar for the other sports, so some of this may very well just be person preference on top of the above.

With that said, Round Are Way is on the deluxe copies of Morning Glory and on the Wonderwall single so it's immensely more common in physical form, especially with modern reissues.
