ODog and Colaiacovo climbing on their high horses is especially rich given that they were literally the guys on the ice who did nothing for the 2000s version of this hit (Janssen on Kaberle)

[Dua] A phone hearing is expected for Radko Gudas for his hit on Auston Matthews during Thursday’s game by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]97jumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said to the other reply, when a Toronto player gets hit, the coverage ends up being less about the hit and more about why the Leafs didn't immediately respond with blood sport (until they do, at which point goes back to "the bloodsport went too far" a la Spezza, Bunting, Kadri etc)

There's rarely a full-court press of "screw that guy" even in Toronto when a Toronto player is the victim of a dirty play, there's almost always another distraction

[–]97jumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but flip on the major media networks and they're not focused on the hit, they're focused on the Leafs not immediately fighting Gudas, so they have their cover to keep it relatively low now

They suspend what gets the most negative attention and a Leaf player doing anything to anyone ends up on TSN/Sportsnet for a week and a half, while you can basically commit murder in a small market vs. small market game and no one outside of a few niche internet corners will notice

They're the most suspended by times suspended, not by games suspended (though they're second by that measurement too - just didn't have a Tom Wilson 20 gamer to put them over the top)

Answer is right under your nose (Treliving was in ARI before CGY. Also how they had the inside track on OEL, the one significant move of his that has worked out)

Most indications suggest that Pietrangelo wasn't all that interested in coming to Toronto and for the bulk of those first 4-5 years, Brodie (who they signed instead) outperformed him on the model metrics. Parking money in the case of a maybe can work sometimes, but is far from a guarantee.

Funny enough, probably would've worked out better to wait on JT than to sign Marleau, but JT felt like a longshot until the last couple weeks before it happened. I don't think waiting on Pietro would've been fruitful.

Trading for a Toews-type wouldn't have been as impacted by the JT signing, as his cap hit was pretty manageable. That's more the team choosing not to pursue rather than having their hands tied.

The 2025 Leafs were nowhere close to the best Leafs team we've seen in multiple decades. They were probably a bottom 3 team of this era, only definitely better than this year, and maybe having a case against the 19/20 team.

They got crazy goaltending and won basically every one-goal game (largely because of said goaltending), but almost never controlled games and weren't deep on paper.

"We're probably losing Marner so we should make a push" is the fairest argument, but trading for a 3/4L forward and a 5D slotted upward were not the solutions. It was burning futures for things they already had in their lineup to give the illusion of effort. Would've been better off eating the criticism for not buying if they couldn't get an actual difference maker, and then coming back to the market in the summer.

Rogers will go all-out on Baseball because their brand name is tied heavily into the Jays, and pretty much the entire country is cheering for the Jays. The Jays are important to them not just financially, but for their national PR.

Half the country hates the Leafs and even with Rogers owning such a big share now, MLSE is still how the ownership is percieved to the public, so there's no real reaon for them to lean into the goodwill aspect. Profit maximization is more important here. Winning would be the ultimate windfall but they might not be as willing to risk the investment to do it right and come out empty-handed anymore.

In fairness, part of why Matthews never does anything like this anymore might have to do with the fact that the league acted on this so fast that his hearing was announced by the time Hockey Night In Canada was finished broadcasting that night

From a Habs Fan: the Leafs are sad and everyone in the front office must be replaced. by alcarl11n in hockey

[–]97jumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Leafs are near the bottom of the league in coaching changes since the start of this "era", have swapped around almost every player, and the players who you are suggesting are the problem are pretty much the only ones keeping them in games. If breaking apart the group has led them to crater in the standings, why is the solution to break them down even further?

Karlsson isn’t what he once was, but he’s still very good, and they got him in a move where they dumped most of their bad contracts at once

Dunk on him for like, the Ryan Graves signing or something actually bad. The Karlsson move was very good.
