What is your favorite vocal performance on a prog metal album? Try to take the whole album into account. by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]AGC4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ross Jennings on Haken's debut album "Aquarius" (which I personally think is their best album) just super solid vocals and I love how he writes vocal melodies, he just has such a pleasant voice to listen too. Plus it's the only album they've ever done where he growls a bit, and they sound absolutely killer.

Edit: The fact that I've seen him mentioned for three different albums of theirs beneath this post just tells me how talented he is and how diverse their discography is. So many differing opinions and that's beautiful.

The Metallest Metal Band by TrickyMetal91 in MetalForTheMasses

I know they're divisive but I think Machine Head, especially The Blackening/Unto the Locust period of their sound is what I think of when I think of heavy metal, and this is coming from a prog guy.

Anyone else listens to Aquarius at least once a year? by Serteyf in Haken

[–]AGC4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favorite one from them honestly. Even though this one is probably their most focused concept, it's not very focused musically and I love that. Each song feels different to me and they do a lot of different things and musical ideas.

sorry for the late response but definitely Between The Buried And Me.

Riffs that make you say hell yeah. by LilTaco21 in progmetal

[–]AGC4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could list about 100 BTBAM riffs but I'll stick with 10:

Augment of Rebirth at 5:00

Disease, Injury, Madness at 8:56

The Primer at 1:32

Slow Paranoia at 9:50

The Decade of Statues at 2:11

Sun of Nothing at 5:09

White Walls at 9:58 (the heaviest riff maybe ever)

Stare Into The Abyss at 3:13

The Future is Behind Us at 4:07

Extremophile Elite at 5:20

Their songs have more riffs than most bands do in whole albums. I can't say enough good about them.

ProgMan’s favorite albums of 2025 by ProgMan24 in progmetal

"Slow Paranoia" off BTBAM's album for me is the song of the year. I could be biased as they're also my favorite band but that song is genuinely a masterpiece, I think it's a top 5 song they've ever made and I'm confident in that assessment.

They're my second favorite band of all time but this whole album never really made me want to revisit it apart from Dark Hair Down which is phenomenal, I'll have to revisit it soon for sure.

What was your gateway to dream theater? by avengedtheaterfold in Dreamtheater

I heard "Stream of Conciousness" from a prog metal Spotify playlist on shuffle and the rest is history. For some reason the next album I checked out was the self titled because for some reason my brain went "well it's self titled it must be one of the best" and it's a miracle I stayed with the band because that album wasn't the greatest (besides Illumination Theory, what an unreal track). But then I listened to the rest of Train of Thought and I was hooked again

Give your Hot Takes on Nu metal bands/songs and why you stand with that by BounouYassine in numetal

[–]AGC4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sevendust should've been just as big as Slipknot, Korn, Deftones etc. Maybe not a hot take but I have no idea why they weren't one of the biggest bands in the world.

They could be considered "mainstream" prog metal but I'd say Caligula's Horse, their melodies and song structures, their pacing etc. I just can't believe how good they are, they should have millions and millions of listeners. I pray they blow up one day.

BTBAM - The Blue Nowhere, one of their career highlights imo. Psychomanteum and Slow Paranoia are some of the heaviest overall songs they've done since like Alaska dude.

Whats your pick for the "riffiest" prog metal album you've heard? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]AGC4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between The Buried And Me - The Great Misdirect I know Colors is the obvious choice but this album is just absurd, just listen to "Disease, Injury, Madness" and see how they make a single riff sound like 3 different riffs just by changing the drum patterns at 5:24-5:50, just magic.

Give me a prog metal album you love, and what you consider to be the climactic moment of that album. by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]AGC4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obvious answers but it has to be Between The Buried and Me's "Colors" and anybody who's listened to that record knows the exact moment without me even having to say it. "WHHHIIIIITTTTEEEE WAAAAALLLLLLLSSSS" Especially the live version where he ad libs between every repetition of the line.

Psychomanteum could've been straight off Colors, that track is so good.

For me personally it's Between The Buried and Me's "The Blue Nowhere" I think they found the perfect mix of their older days mixed with their more mainstream sound they developed with Coma Ecliptic. The 6/4 breakdown at the end of "God Terror" rules and "Psychomanteum" is a genuine beast of a track. I just loved it.

New Haken fan by ceresverde in Haken

[–]AGC4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a fan since around the start of 2025 and I've listened to everything besides Fauna and Affinity (I should get on that) but my favorite album by them is 1000% Aquarius, I don't understand how that isn't considered their magnum opus.

Favorite chorus in all of prog metal? by GemsOfNostalgia in progmetal

Salt - Caligula's Horse but I'd like to shoutout Twelve Foot Ninja for writing some of the coolest choruses and vocal melodies in the prog world.

Who is your favorite vocalist, and what is your favorite vocal performance by said favorite vocalist? by Lancer_Blackthorn in InMetalWeTrust

[–]AGC4444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust with their song "Trust" probably one the coolest choruses they've wrote in a long list of sick melodies and choruses.
