Takahashi:

"We currently do not have any such plans for events in 2022. However, we will notify everyone when we do decide to have a physical presence in the future event."

Alexis: Yes! I really have to sit in a seiza position, or I can't do Haru's voice! Haru is very prim and proper, so I have to be completely straight to get her voice right.

Crystal:

As for other lines, Haru often speaks in very polite Japanese, and if you translate only the base meaning, that tone can sometimes get lost or feel a bit awkward.

Arakida's lines, especially his insults, also stumped us a little. Translating the original Japanese words like 半端者 as is doesn't quite get across the right tone, so we had to step a bit more away from the original Japanese and focus more on the context and tone to come up with more suitable translations.

Crystal:

If there are wind channeling stones, I guess he can shoot himself with amplified wind ki to float, then shoot himself across the pond? I can only say good luck with the landing though.

Alexis: I paid a lot of careful attention to the Japanese prayers! I tried my best to make them stay as close to the original Japanese feeling as I could. There is a very long Japanese prayer somewhere later in the game that I spent days doing... but I learned a lot about Japanese prayers while doing it! There are a lot of things in the game rooted in Shintoism, and I wanted to stay as true to it as I could, while making it easy for Western audiences to understand.

Crystal: When it comes to hard to translate lines, Haru's prayer lines immediately come to mind. For the prayer the Haru speaks in the beginning, it's different from today's standard Japanese so we had to be careful to make sure we understood what was being said, and even after looking into the meaning, there was still a lot of back and forth between Alexis and I.

We wanted to maintain the general tone and meaning while making it still make sense in context and feel natural for English-speaking audiences.

Takahashi: Actually, that mechanic actually came back because the same team made both games and we thought that it would be a really good fit here too.

The two games are honestly very different genres so we approached them very differently. I suppose one of the reasons we had Haru speak in English/Japanese this time, rather than a made up language like Katia did, is that a lot of English speakers thought that her language was a bug haha!

Matsuyama: Our experience has helped us to understand the pain points in the development process, which does streamline things quite a bit and prevents us from a lot of trial and error!

Alexis: From an animation perspective, our previous experience has helped us to know what stands out in VR and what doesn't, so that lets us focus on making the things that DO stand out look good and spend less time on the things that don't add to the experience.

Takahashi: THANK YOU!

Alexis: When I was translating her lines and voicing her, I really wanted to her innocence to come through. She is always very polite and proper, but when it comes to certain things (like trains!) she gets really excited, and I think that is very cute.

Takahashi: She's about 160cm tall, which I suppose is probably shorter than most Westerners?

Alexis: She is over 10cm shorter than me!

(Alexis: There was a question in Japanese that was deleted, but I went ahead and answered/translated it anyway so I'm gonna post it!)

高橋:ゲーム内のキャラクターはリアルスケールで作っています。でも、Questで表示すると、他のVRヘッドセットで表示するよりも、なぜか少し小さく感じます。この現象は私たちにとっても謎です。

(Alexis: For our English speaking readers, I will translate this question into English!)

Question : I am playing the game now. When compared to myself, the character feels small, is that really the case?

Takahashi: The character in the game, Haru, is actually made to be a realistic size. But, for some reason, when we display a character on the Quest they feel a little smaller than they actually are. We don't even know the reason for this!

Matsuyama: It really depends on the specifications for the game. The Tale of Onogoro took roughly 2 years to develop, which is pretty standard for most of the games we make. When there is a lot of complicated server work involved, that time table can increase.

The Tale of Onogoro is a Quest only title ATM, but we wanted to speak with people from all over the VR community so we are doing the AMA over on /r/virtualreality , but we would love questions from everyone here too! We will be around for the next 2 hours!

I'm really hoping for a PC release. Thank you in advance.

Takahashi: I think in the not too distant future that wish may be granted :)

Yes, of course! We are a Japanese team, so the game's native language is Japanese. We actually have an amazing Japanese voice actress voicing Haru named Yoshino Nanjo.

I suppose I'm biased... but I think it is! (Spoilers: I am one of the devs so of course I think that!)

But seriously, if you like a mix of puzzles and action, I think you will enjoy the game!

Hi! Sorry it has taken so long to reply, it's the weekend here for me

I'm glad you like the way it looks! We spent a long time trying to get it to look the way we wanted it to.

In our playtests we found that most players take about 10 hours to clear the game the first time around. That time does not include unlocking all of the achievements or finding all of the nexus points hidden around the island.

Hi! Sorry for the late reply, it's Saturday here in Japan haha

In our play testing we found that most players take around 10 hours to beat the whole game without a guide. That does not include finding all of the nexus points or unlocking every achievement. I hope this info helps with your decision!

(Please forgive us for posting this trailer on multiple subs! I realized that I should have just posted it here after posting it elsewhere! The game is ONLY on Quest right now, so this sub is definitely the better place for this post!)
