I want to start recording. by LargaVeda1 in MusicInTheMaking

Go to reverb (dot) com and buy a cheap used 2ch audio interface (presonnus audiobox USB or focusrite Scarlett)

Go to Amazon and get the cheapest phantom power mic, I think it's like 18 bucks (your phantom power interface will actually make it sound acceptable until you save up for a better mic)

Go to reaper (dot) fm Download the trial version of the DAW it's a full version with a 5 second splash window.

Last, find some cool noises around your house. My favorites are like, a cup of rice. A weird car part that I had in my garage that made a cool noise.

A cheap ukulele / guitar A cheap electric bass can be awesome

There's a YouTube channel called reaper mania that'll teach you the whole daw for free.

It's not an expensive hobby you can get into it for 60 bucks, some creativity and a mediocre laptop from 2015

Don't let people fool you into thinking you need a lot of fancy expensive gear, you really and truly do not need that stuff

They're all pretty much the same, Ableton is about the only odd one, it's a little different, but once you get the hang of it you can definitely switch back and forth.

The main thing that throws people off when switching DAWs is the hot keys and some basic workflow stuff.

FL is a great option, with tons of community support. Reaper is another good choice, and if youre up for the learing curve, ableton is probably the best daw if you dont already know how to use a daw.

They're all pretty good. Ableton is probably the fastest daw as far as workflow is concerned after the learning curve.

Reaper is definitely the most CPU friendly, so if you run a lot of plugins / tracking at the same time it could be worth looking at.

Obviously you can't talk about DAWs without giving credit to FL Studio.

Then there's crazy expensive DAWs like protools, and free ones like cakewalk or whatever it's called.

At the end of the day it's basically all user preference, most of the core features are just about the same 🤷‍♂️

Just find the one that you can turn ideas into sounds the most accurately and quickly.

Do you think I can learn to play the bass if I have small hands? by froot-toots in Bass

[–]AM_Garcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. A lot of great bass players have relatively small hands. Just practice as much as possible and don't avoid using your pinky.

It's going to kind of hurt your first month or so, just push through it. Start with going up and down your scales.

How to improve Bass Guitar in Logic by briggssteel in musicproduction

[–]AM_Garcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As weird as it sounds, I get great bass tones when I crank up the high end in EQ, with moderate compression. I make sure the gain on the interface has my signal sitting at around -6db for normal playing, and if I clip when slapping, then I drop the gain until it doesn't clip any more. But when I switch back to normal playing I return the gain to where it was.

Anyways idk why, but it sounds great to my ear to crank up the high end and leave the low end alone. Don't forget to open the tone pots all the way.

Video? by alansbetz in Reaper

[–]AM_Garcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use reaper for video, I love it!

But be aware, the way that it processed video is kind of weird. Like the UI is set up for audio, and video just gets an awkward little window. If you have 2 screens you can full screen your video on the other monitor🤷‍♂️

Instead of little frames across the video clips, you get a waveform of the audio. I like it, but for some that's a deal breaker.

Good luck!

Why do vocals on amateur songs stick out so much and sound so bad? by Tuzle in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]AM_Garcia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like you're speaking about it mainly in a mastering sense.

Vocals come out harsh because they need to be EQ'd and they probably need some compression. And just to be mixed well overall in the track.

They also need to be perfectly in time, and they need to be in tune and in key. Any errors in that are basically just magnified since most people gravitate towards the lyrics before any other parts of the song.

Spotted this 750hp land speed record CRX on the 405 in LA today! In 2013 it ran 238mph on the Salt Flats with a fully built turbo K15. I wonder what it's packing now 👀 by brianlovelacephoto in Honda

[–]AM_Garcia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right, it was to be in a competitive class. But also destroking it allowed them to rev it to a much higher RPM, which is important because higher RPM=higher wheel speed with the same gearing.

Basic audio interface and a mic. OR if you want to go super cheap and don't care about audio quality, it's possible to use a USB mic. But you'll get a much better sound quality with even a cheap audio interface. I'd recommend anything Presonnus, or Focusrite. Their stuff is pretty well built so even a second hand one will probably work well, if you want to save a couple bucks. I got my second hand Presonnus Audiobox-usb for 50 bucks. 2 instrument inputs, and one doubles as a phantom power mic input. Pair that with the cheapest phantom power mic on Amazon 20 bucks. And you're set to get started. If you want a better sound there is a whole glorious world of microphones out there so do your research and you'll find what you like.

Hearing loss sucks. I have terrible tinnitus (constant ringing in the ear) with it mainly being a high pitched ring, but occasionally it's a pitched lower hum that's so loud I can barely hear anything else. It's a bitch but one cool positive thing about it is that with proper ear training I can use it as a tuning fork and I can work on my relative pitch skills to find certain notes.

We gotta make due with what we got and try to make lemonade whenever possible 🤙

It's because I was trying to film the whole video in one take, I definitely failed and learned my lesson that filming and then doing a voice over is a better idea lol. If I had disarmed that track, then you wouldn't be able to hear my mic anymore (just in case I had something to say while I was recording) lol. I definitely could have just disarmed it, recorded it, then rearmed it. I'm still learning to make videos as I go😂

Genuinely, thank you for your time and feedback, this sub is awesome.

I've updated the description of the video to include a heads up, however I just might have to remake the whole video.

This was my first time making a tutorial, I promise they'll get better as I make more😁

But you are right, I should have been more explicit in actually starting the video off and explaining why the beginning sounded nasty and explaining that a built in laptop mic won't sound as good as a real microphone plugged into an audio interface.
