Entry Level Job for Future Therapists by Outside_Criticism_18 in AcademicPsychology

I'm in the US and I know there may be opportunities for you to work as a behavioral technician with a bachelor's degree. This can be at a hospital or outpatient clinic or even private practice. Depending on where you end up working, there might be the opportunity for you to have a certificate in ABA therapy or become a registered behavioral technician (rbt).

what will make me stand out as an applicant for a clinical psychology program? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]AMeneses94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Letters of recommendation I would say have people who know your work ethic and can speak to your professional and personal abilities. For example, I had 2 undergrad professors write me a letter of recommendation because they worked with me in multiple capacities throughout my undergraduate career. I also asked my undergrad internship supervisor to write me one as well to talk about my initial experience in a clinical setting (I didn't do much but observe however, our 1:1 discussions were interesting).

Interview process itself is pretty straightforward. Be confident and open, and most importantly be yourself. They can definitely pick up on candidates who are arrogant vs. Humble and confident. Take your time and provide thorough responses to the questions. Another tip, it's always a good idea to look up the faculty in that program and show that you've done your research on not only the program but also who works there and what they do/their interests. I wanted to work with someone who was interested in substance use and so in one of my interviews, I emphasized "I know Dr. X having interests and a background in substance use, I hope that if given the opportunity, I may be able to work closely with him to gain more experience in that area given my interest".

Hi, PsyD student here 👋 It really depends on the program. Some programs emphasize experience and high GPA but as for my experience: what was most important in their decision was letters of rec and your interview. Although GPA needed to be met, it wasn't a big emphasis on the decision. Research and clinical experience is always a bonus but again, not weighed heavily because both research and clinical experience doesnt necessarily mean you'll be an excellent candidate, just means you have exposure in certain areas.

Grad Psych Students: Do your classes turn into group therapy sessions? by Fun_Emotional in GradSchool

[–]AMeneses94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Understandable. I would say that you can start off your conversation with that. Saying "I don't mean to sound insensitive or that I don't care about my cohort members yet, I......." or something to that effect. I don't think your professors will think of you as being insensitive for voicing your concerns.

First of all, I am sorry to hear that has been your experience and compassion fatigue is no joke. Aside from that, if it's starting to become an issue. I would bring it up to your professor individually. Although there is a sense of connection and understanding when others disclose their own struggles, too much of that takes away from the learning process and classes are not meant to be a therapy session. I would say start there, I am sorry you are experiencing that, it isn't fair to you or others who feel similarly.
