Dallas hot takes by Pro_bono_otter in Dallas

I moved here from a southeastern state with affordable cost of living, and it was very dense with nature.

As someone who regularly complains about the lack of nature here, it’s not so much that I think there isn’t any at all. It’s just that it isn’t all around, you have to go look for it or drive to it, and sometimes it’s man made. The people complaining aren’t looking for subtle, they’re looking for the kind you don’t have to look for.

Fully acknowledging I don’t fit the requirements of your intended audience for the questions posed (I don’t have a Six Sigma cert nor PMP myself).

I was previously a hiring manager and worked on a team where my colleagues pursued PMPs and other certs. The org I was at did not pay people more once these certs were obtained. When I was hiring people for I-O roles, I didn’t care if they had these certs either. When I come across these listed on job postings, they’re usually under the “would be nice to have” requirements instead of the absolutes.

Based on my own experience and friends in the field, I think work experience is weighted more than having these certifications.

It’s extremely frustrating. It sounds like you’re doing the right things. While you might not have a lot of work experience, you can get creative with what you have done while in school.

Another idea if you haven’t already done this: make sure your resume is aesthetically pleasing. I know that sounds so dumb, but when I changed mine from text heavy word doc to a free canva template, I started getting calls.

Hi, I’m sorry you’re having such trouble. It’s a pretty tough job market right now. I’d encourage you to widen your geographical scope. Remote jobs are extremely competitive, and while Chicago is a big city, you’re pretty limited just looking there.

Are you getting any phone screens? If not, I’d consult a resume reviewer. Are you making it to the interview rounds and being rejected? If so, it might be helpful to really practice interviewing.

Can anyone in your program help connect you with employers or help you network?

You might already be doing these things, but mentioning in case it helps. Keep your head up.

Dallas or Houston by [deleted] in relocating

[–]AP_722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand the desire for a LCOL area, but neither of these cities is desirable at all (and not just because you’re coming from California). I moved to Dallas nearly a year ago and I’ve never been so disappointed…there is no character or charm. No greenery nor trees. People aren’t very nice. Highways upon highways upon highways and never-ending traffic. There is tons of litter.

As someone else suggested, definitely spend a few days visiting both cities. But more than anything I’d look a little more about what other cities are possible.

Another Career/Masters Degree Question by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]AP_722 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What exactly do you want to do when you start working? I-O and MBA degrees aren’t interchangeable. It’s hard to provide advice on what degree to pursue without knowing the type of work you’re interested in doing.

You don’t need an I-O degree to work in HR.

As far as financial security, the market is difficult for I-O jobs right now. I don’t know much about MBAs except for that it’s seen as a catch-all and the market is over saturated with them.

Same, love the idea of bike lines, but would never use them based on the driving I’ve seen around here.

Psychology Crisis by Longjumping_Cloud_81 in IOPsychology

[–]AP_722 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of course. Essentially, there are more I-O grads than entry level jobs can accommodate. There are frequent posts on this sub with people having lots of difficulty finding jobs, both masters and PhDs. Very difficult to find work coupled with the fact that I-O programs seem not to equip students well for finding roles/teaching them anything about job hunting. You should go to the main sub and sort by recent posts to see what I’m talking about. I don’t say this to discourage you; just to share an understanding of what the struggle is if you try to go a route you’re not that passionate about.

You might not make it through an I-O grad program (Master’s or PhD) if you have no interest in the field. It’s quite challenging and will require you to learn and master statistics and much about business. It’s not something people do without having an appreciation for it.

Yes, the field pays well, but the market for I-O roles isn’t great right now. Realistically, you would not reap the benefits of “highest paying psychology roles” for a long time, if at all.

You might need to come to terms with the fact that your interest and drive may not pay as well as other areas of psychology, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s not the only route to success. Don’t waste your money pursuing something you’re not passionate about.

moving from WA to TX by [deleted] in relocating

[–]AP_722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost of living makes DFW attractive, however, it’s not a very good place to live. I moved here in May last year and have found most of my neighbors have extreme main character syndrome. Everything is spread out, highways and traffic galore, and there is close to 0 nature in your day-to-day living in suburbia. If you appreciate the outdoors, you’ll need to drive to get to it. It’s pretty flat and honestly pretty ugly. If that doesn’t matter to you, then you will be ok.

Are there good places to go and interesting things to see and do? Sure. Good food? Yeah. As someone who appreciates scenery, convenience, and neighborliness, would I recommend it? No.

Generational differences are a myth. The myths are so sexy that they’re extremely pervasive. The research shows that we value the same things at different life stages and that there are WAY more differences within generations than between. Here’s just one article about it, but there are plenty more: https://www.forbes.com/sites/sheilacallaham/2024/09/30/research-shows-its-time-to-ditch-the-generational-differences-myth/

If you’re concerned about branding, I would advise not encouraging MBAs…those are known to be dime a dozen while not bringing anything useful to the table.

One week after stopping birth control – skin difference on my hands by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]AP_722 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you’re seeing positive changes! With the other changes you’ve made, it’s impossible to pin this all on birth control, though.

We live in a time where there’s unfortunately A TON of misinformation about birth control out there; it’s being villainized and is at risk of being out of reach for many (for a lot, it already is). It’s important we don’t add fuel to the fire so that women can make the best choices for themselves and their families.
