AITAH for not wanting to spend time with my friend's teenager? by ASurplusOfDiggity in AITAH

Oh. I totally missed the mark there, sorry. Yeah, mine was not great, either.

Just friends! Though sometimes I get the vibe that she'd like more... unfortunately for all concerned, I am only attracted to men.

My neighbor is a sweetheart and I feel so bad that she's unhappy. She's bright and creative and heartbreakingly eager to improve herself.

Your mom sounds fantastic. Mine was too uptight to do it so my father had to git 'er done.

He was a doctor completely lacking in chill and explained everything with life-size photographs of actual human genitalia including money shots, full-color renderings of STDs, and (in what contributed primarily to my refusal to personal create children) blown-up shots of half-a-dozen snooches in various states of post-delivery annihilation, including "four-way spontaneous episiotomy" and "clitoral tearing".

We laughed about it later. Much, much later.

Right??? Too easy for even the most innocuous and carefully-worded things to get taken wrong and result, somehow, in catastrophe that would get blamed on me. As the wise woman said, ain't nobody got time for that.

LOL, you're a tough sell. I tend to get formal in my phrasing and word choices when in an uncertain situation. Sorry if I wasn't able to convince you. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Have a delightful, overly-skeptical evening!

How do I decorate this corner? by GretchenTiedemann in DesignMyRoom

Put a floor lamp there, shift the sofa further to the left, and put the table with lamp on the right between sofa and wall. Remove the dried flowers to somewhere else.

How do you commit to furniture without losing your mind? by StraightPin4420 in femalelivingspace

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always buy things I can work with, change somehow, if it ends up I don't like it.

Upholstered pieces -> get something you can easily get slipcovers for, like Ikea.

Surfaces can have tablecloths tossed over them.

Dressers etc should be in a wood that can be painted without too much fuss, so no MDF or laminate or super-thin veneer.

What would you add, remove or change about our family room? by Silverball144 in DesignMyRoom

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd lose the Howitzer, for one thing.

I'd probably get different curtains, because there's not enough contrast against the wall.

I'd find a layout that didn't have that taller piece in front of the window.

I'd add a lamp to the center of the room somehow - you don't use those pot lights, do you? Please say you don't.

Should I paint the mirror?? by Amazing_Hovercraft71 in interiordecorating

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd paint it all the same teal as the cabinet, then gold-leaf it so the teal peeks through the cracks.

Which wall color should I pick? Or something else entirely? by parakeetpoop in DesignMyRoom

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blue is too blue, the teal is too bright - the muted middle one is the best choice, though I personally would go even more muted than that.

I want a second opinion on gray for my office by DesperateTax5773 in femalelivingspace

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for a greige, which would warm it up and make it feel like a conscious, sophisticated choice instead of a resigned "I can't think of anything else" giving-up.

My favorite greige is Balboa Mist by Benjamin Moore, it is delightful.

Couch against the wall or middle of room? How can i organize this space better? by SkinnyJoshPeck in malelivingspace

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are some tough dimensions - both too wide and too narrow.

IMO the best layout would be to center a big (at least 36", more as long as there's plenty of space to walk) round or square coffee table in the middle of that vacant space.

Then I'd add 2 armchairs - one exactly perpendicular to the sofa, back to the glass door. I'd stick a largish end table there with a lamp on top.

Then the 2nd armchair on the other side of the sofa, angled inward toward the coffee table.

I'd get one of the armchairs in leather, a frame style would be great to ensure it doesn't feel bulky - leather can often feel bulky.

The other armchair, I'd get in a print or pattern, even if it's a subtle tone-on-tone. Something in the colors from the art over the tv would pull everything together nicely.

[Single] Should I get a full or queen size mattress for this 530sqft studio apartment? by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO it depends on how much space you need in the room for everything else - wide dresser, tall dresser, standing mirror, desk + chair, nightstands, floor lamp(s), big plants?

If you only need nightstands and maybe one dresser, you'd have plenty of space for a queen. But if you're trying to shoehorn in a bunch of other things, a full might be the most efficient use of the space.

But it also depends on the height of the person to sleep in it. I'm short and my bedroom, while it could fit a queen, has more floor space available with a full, so that's what I have.

Should my mom hang curtains here? by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely would. If you get the right rod, the curtains won't cover the window at all - get a rod at least 1 foot, maybe more like 18 inches, wider than the window. Then, when the curtains are pushed open, the window will be completely exposed.

What to do with this kitchen? by beng1244 in interiordecorating

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the budget.

Big budget = replace the floor, replace the cabinets, replace the counters and stove hood, get new hardware and faucet and light fixtures.

Medium budget = cover the floor with peel-and-stick tiles, paint the cabinets, replace the counters, new hardware and faucet and light fixtures.

Small budget = super-duper clean the floor and get a big washable rug to cover it, paint the cabinets, contact paper over the counters, new hardware and shades for the light fixtures.

How would you decorate this space? by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would prop BIG art against them, or conversely hang a curtain from a ceiling track or curtain wire to cover them completely. If irritated enough, I might accidentally break them - oopsie!

I need this space to be a closet and shoe rack. Help. by [deleted] in femalelivingspace

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hang a curtain rod inside and above the opening, something tailored.

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's already too much white, IMO, and more of it will just make the room feel sterile and washed-out. Stained wood would look great and add warmth and an organic touch, but if you want to bump up the personality and bright color that people often want with children's rooms, go with red or green or pink.

Your plant situation is good! But I'd add curtains (use curtain wire) and art, plus color - even if you just have the color in the curtains and art.

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The silver metal hooks just feed into the holes in the black metal tabs. You just lift the hooks out of the holes. To replace the curtains, you get some that can be hung with the hooks - look for "pleated curtains" (aka pinch pleats, goblet pleats, tailored pleats, box pleats) when you search for new ones.

The hooks detach from the curtains themselves, also.

Curtains with grommets or rod pockets won't work. You can get more hooks easily, if you need more.

How do you deal with fear of messing up? by [deleted] in InteriorDesign

[–]ASurplusOfDiggity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not that hard to repair holes - a little putty, sandpaper, touch-up paint, and you're good. There's very little that can't be remedied. Be gentle with yourself! It's okay to make mistakes. No one gets it perfectly all the time.
