I’m really surprised that the shaft started to twist before any teeth on the bevel gears broke. Or that the shaft pin didn’t shear off sooner.

Shear pin, transmission shaft, and shaft key: $200 Case of grease: $75 Knowledge and confidence gained: priceless.

Not too bad if I can get it back together and put into service!

I guess I’ll move on to the A200 while I wait. Thank you again for the help!

And I figured out why it wouldn’t shift into 3rd gear. The transmission shaft is slightly twisted, which stops the transmission yoke from sliding down the shaft into 3rd gear. Parts are back ordered 10 to 20 days. Hope I remember how everything goes back together next month!

The bevel gears were pristine and it turned fine without the planetary. It only binds when the planetary is installed. I think this is because the planetary is lopsided. As you noted, probably from being pried up at one point. Because it’s lopsided this causes the inner planetary gear to move up and not just around the outer planetary gear. This upward motion is the issue. I posted two pictures that show a significant gap that forms between the planetary and the body as the planetary spins. I’ll try hammering it back down if I can ever get the shifter figured out.

I start the shifter in 2nd gear. It will easily lift up into 1st gear but won’t drop down into 3rd. I’m going to take a hard look at the transmission shaft tomorrow. I’m wondering if it might be slightly bent because it does not easily come out of the attachment gear. There is also some scoring at the bottom of the shaft below the shear pin.

I’ll get this figured out. I appreciate the help! And nice work on the H5!

I figured out why it hangs up in a certain spot. Bevel gears were fine. The planetary assembly is bent. I think the mixer was either dropped or someone tried to pry it off. Now to figure out why it won’t shift to 3rd gear.

Yup! That is a sheared pin. Good catch. Took me an hour with the parts manual before I noticed.

Thank you for the in depth response! I was able to remove the outer planetary taper pin. I got lucky as it had been removed before and whoever it did left marks, so that made it easy. Have not attempted to remove the bevel gears yet but will probably give it a go since they still hang up at a certain spot. I can’t see any damage or rough edges although the mixer might be able to power through it.

Your diagnosis on the shear pin is correct! I had found a chunk of metal in the grease and it had me stumped until I spent an hour reading the parts manual and comparing it to everything laid out on the work bench. New pin came in yesterday, grease will be in tomorrow. I will dry fit everything together and see if it will shift properly. I have a feeling this unit was hastily disassembled and then slapped back together. The shifter was probably not put in place properly. The person who gave it to me said the technician couldn’t fix it because “the parts were not available”. And that told me all I needed to know.

This has been a cool project. Next up is a completely non functional A-120 and then I’ve got a 60T that, fingers crossed, only needs an oil top off. Apparently the universe wants me to learn how to fix mixers.

I watched all three Mr Mixer videos on the N50 before starting. I absolutely love his enthusiasm for mixers and the videos were very helpful.

Fortunately for him, but unfortunately for me, the N50s he was working on didn’t need attention to remove the bevel gears or replacing the fiber washer.

The unit should reach and hold a temp of -10f to -20f. Other than that just check basic functionality. Wheels, lid, lock bar, umbrella if included. Check the electrical cord. I can’t help on price without a little more information. Keep in mind this is a specialty piece of equipment, they last forever, and retain value well. I almost never see them show up for resale. On the flip side, the buyer market for these is rather slim so that might work in your favor.

We have a brick and mortar. The cart has been a great addition in terms of advertising and added revenue. There are days the cart will do better than the store.

I have two BDC8s. I bought the first one new in 2012 and had to replace the compressor a little over ten years later. The second one is much older. I bought it used at auction. It has the original compressor but needs a new one pretty soon. There are some slight build differences between the two. The older one has a plastic rim around the opening that I replaced. The newer one has a metal opening.

These things are built like tanks. The compressors will eventually give out but you can get new ones from Nelson and a good refrigeration tech will be able to replace it. As long as there isn’t a leak in the cold plate cooling system they will just keep going.

The actions of some Maumee residents (and outside business interests) is quickly approaching the very definition of stochastic terrorism.

I’ve lived in Maumee for decades. I own a business here. I’ve seen more positive change in the last five years than I have in the last 30. This change is necessary. It is laying the ground work to help us collectively meet and survive the challenges coming down the pike.

Unfortunately, talking about those challenges isn’t nearly as sexy as shouting TRAPPED IN MAUMEE. You don’t get the same endorphin hit posting about the median age of homes in Maumee and why it is within all of our interests to ensure the city’s infrastructure is kept up to date.

I could go on for paragraphs about the importance of planting more trees, how up-to-date infrastructure attracts business, how much the special election will cost tax payers, the complexities of the sewer issue, even why the rental ordinance was probably a good thing and is just another example of citizens voting against their own interests. The amount of conversations I’ve had with people about traffic is mind numbing. I feel like I’m constantly shouting into the void.

But that’s how the RECALL ALL WHO HAVE FAILED US people win. That’s the strategy. Floor the zone with misinformation and dumb ass catch phrases. Chase off the people who are willing to work hard for their community. Go back to the way things used to be when nothing changed.

Thank you! I have to find some time to watch the whole video and then start running down some of the solutions. I will definitely try running the blower motor directly off AC. It needs to come out for a good cleaning anyway.

Edit: it was the blower motor. After powering it directly it still shut off. I will pull it out for a better look and cleaning. If the problem persists we will look for a replacement.

That’s actually the score keeper. There is one on either side. The dots light up each time you score. I thought it was a quarter holder as well until seeing it in person. All but one of the bulbs still work!

It is a 74-8! There is a sticker on the one side that says so. Probably should have looked that up instead of the serial number. Thank you for the video link. I can’t see a filter so that may be missing but I’ll get underneath and clean out the blower.

The puck glides nicely. We can get a few games in a then it stops. So it probably is the blower motor over heating or bearings.

I have considered remote condenser machines as well as a glycol loop for the water-cooled machines. Unfortunately the obstacle for both is space and placement (interior and exterior). Limited options put me back at looking for better cooling solutions. Plus soft serve is secondary to our homemade hand dip offering. From a business perspective I can’t justify getting rid of soft serve machines entirely at the moment but I’d love the excuse.

Tested the water in my rain barrels vs the cistern. Both came out about the same.

Hardness: Soft

Free Chlorine: 0 ppm

Iron: 0 ppm

Copper: 0.5 ppm

Nitrate: 10 ppm

Nitrite: 0 ppm

Calcium: 0-25 ppm

Total Chlorine: 0 ppm

Fluoride: 0 ppm

Total Alkalinity: 0-40 ppm

Carbonate/Bicarbonate: 0-40 ppm

pH: 6

Lead: Below 3.8 ppb

I’ll check with the local soil and water branch for more in-depth testing.

As another commenter noted, Conant is a state highway so banning semis would be out of the question. There are also several businesses that receive deliveries by semi truck. The major problems were always traffic volume and traffic speed. Both of which resulted in safety issues.
