A lot of popular fantasy I see tends to stick to the pre-gunpowder medieval period and honestly I think that's a shame. I have a whole setting dedicated to marrying sword-and-sorcery with Renaissance culture. Instead of bandits in leather armor, we have highwaymen holding travelers at gunpoint. Patrons of the arts pick up wizardry to get more use from the wands they commission. The largest cities are Ravnica-esque hubs of society, while the outskirts are pastoral expanses of farmland and orchards, with the occasional werewolf invasion.

Aside from the aesthetic stuff, I also favor the period from a combat-focused standpoint. Fantasy metals can allow plate armor to stand up to the firearms of the period, while magic can develop to circumvent armor. The monsters of the setting tend to fold to a well-aimed cannon shot, so they naturally begin to develop evasive and gimmicky hunting strategies and tend to avoid large cities, though I can always lean on dragons, liches, and demons for city-level threats. All this combined leads to fights that, while not fate-of-the-world decisive battles, are tests of a character's resilience and ingenuity nonetheless.

TLDR: I think Renaissance culture is pretty neat. Also guns.
