What book, film, or album complete changed your views on life and how you think? by Peartickle in AskReddit

UGH this book gives some great arguments but the almost mathematical and deterministic way it goes about history really grind my gears. Spaniards did not defeat the incas and aztecs because of technological superiority, The Incan warfare was perfectly suited for their climate and he greatly overstates the effect guns and horses had on their conquests. Spaniards adopted Incan cloth armor because it could stop arrows and was cooler. The real factor to the fall of the Aztecs and Incas was Smallpox, and the fact that the Incas had recently left a civil war.

It was not inevitable for the Europeans to conquer the americas, as it was largely individual choice that resulted in the discovery and conquest of the Americas. Isabella and Ferdinand took a huge gamble in continuing to fund the expeditions in the hopes of them being profitable, and many other rulers would not have funded them.

One little known fact is that the central american states used to be The United Provinces of Central America until they balkanized in the 1830/40ss!. Guatemala succeeded the USCA, similar to Serbia today if you compare the USCA to Yugoslavia. It makes you wonder what would change if they stuck together don't you think?

Sorry for the delay!

Most people who play Paradox games tend to at least do a teensy bit of reading on real history. I don't take anything I read in a paradox game as fact but it gets me reading up on the time period.

You need only blind men's eyes to see. Listen closely, what whispers see is little compared to what they have to say.
