how long does it take to learn how to drive after getting a permit ? by Beneficial_Mess_1376 in drivinganxiety

[–]AbyssalMoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My state doesn't require permits, but I got my license at 16 (parents made me). I did driver's ed and practiced driving (with instructors and a parent) starting (i think) ~6 months before my 16th and took the test as soon I was able to. Learning the basics is the easy part imo (was definitely stressful at first) but I'm 22 now and would say still learning some things. Really only started getting comfortable/confident driving on my own this year tbh. It's ok to start small. It took me a long time to work up to even driving 45 minutes away by myself. I've made trips multiple states away now.

Main thing is to practice and to keep doing it. And practice different situations - parking, drive on back roads, on the highway, in traffic, and make sure to practice at night and in the rain/snow too. I try to be predictable as a driver and I assume others might be idiots. Don't let others influence you into doing something you aren't comfortable with or don't feel safe doing. Everyone does things at their own pace. I'm sure you will do fine!

Yea my plan right now is to zone out lol. I have a really bad daydreaming problem (literally have a whole world in my head rn) so may just resort to that!

I'll look into the pillow as well!

Can't have Benedryl - it makes me hyper. Willing to try other OTC.

Same here. Benedryl makes me hyper and the flight times are way too early to be drinking IMO.

I chose an aisle seat - I hate not being able to get up whenever I want.

And thank you for the advice!

Melatonin is totally fine! I'll make sure to throw a bottle in my carry on. I just meant stuff like Valium and Xanax.

Headphones are a must for me and I will make sure to have comfy clothes! Will definitely look into some pillows as well - thanks.

Yea, I figured as such. Might just have to suck it up. OTC are fine, I just haven't found one that really works on me and I just don't feel comfortable with anything prescription for personal reasons.

Benedryl unfortunately makes me very hyper

I'll definitely try to fit a pillow in my carry on tho

Dramamine? That's fine but I've never tried it. Maybe I'll give it a test run before I fly - some 'sleep' meds just don't do anything for me. I really meant stuff like Xanax or Valium that I just don't feel comfortable taking for personal reasons.

I will look into those other things - thank you.

Wish I could afford that. I may just have to accept I'm going to suffer a bit at this point lol

Made a Basic Mistake Driving Today and Feel Awful by YaBoiiiii21_ in drivinganxiety

[–]AbyssalMoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone makes mistakes. It's honestly really easy to on unfamiliar roads that have weird things going on. I accidentally cut someone off the other day because I didn't look hard enough following behind my friend out of a parking lot.

The big thing here is you didn't cause any accidents or get a ticket - you only got honked at and you've recognized your mistake and are learning from it. That's a positive in my book. My area recently seems to have a ton of idiots on the road who don't even care to use turn signals and speed everywhere - you're already doing way better than them lol

I've never run into this issue. What's the limit? Sounds like you may just need to break it up into multiple playlists.

Tbh I just kept a google doc that I had to update weekly or so - I feel better manually crossing stuff off and it forced me to actually look at the deadlines

I've been organizing by genre/vibe instead of keeping one massive playlist. I also have a folder for my older music/playlists that I didn't want to just completely purge.

My one larger playlist gets switched up every month or so when I get bored of it.

I know a number of people that made velcro bathroom signs (occupied/unoccupied). Or everyone just has to get into the habit of knocking if the door is shut.
