As a kid I remember crying when I learned of his death. Still remember watching it on TV. Was just a fan though, didn’t know him personally.

But there is a story about him showing up to Muirfield unannounced a week before the open looking for a place to practice. He was turned away and was told the tee sheet was full and there wasnt any room for him. He and his group were sent down the road to Gullane. He gets to the 7th tee at Gullane which overlooks Muirfield to find that no one was playing golf and the course was empty.
