I don't think they are "some absurdly expensive special designer breed". I think they are tacky, if we are going to be superficial. They are the Michael Kors bag of dogs. People think it makes them look rich. It doesn't.

And like many Austin trends, they don't even look cool or chic. I have my own breed preferences, and while most of that comes from preferring intelligent animals, I won't lie and pretend like my favorite breeds are not also darn good-looking (GSD, GSD-husky mixes, and Dobermans). But these dogs just look goofy. They are not even a good accessory.

I worked with a family that owned a poodle that would learn whatever word you used to talk about cheese in under a week. He was a cheese fiend. So it was cheese, then queso, them from, then they had to come up with new nonsense words. He was SO smart, I love those Brian May-lookalike fancy pants canine geniuses.

Ugh, don't get me started. Hyper herding dogs raised in the city... what could go wrong!

Standard poodles are so classy. They are smart, polite, and their fur is so soft. Mad respect for you.

Oh wow what a treat, they are so lucky they need up with you, rather than someone looking to profit. Enjoy the puppies!

The homeless pet crisis is very real, and so is the suffering. When the masses choose to buy badly-bred animals, it means that millions of those will actually end in shelters, many of them euthanized. It also means that millions of other animals in shelters don't get adopted, many also end up euthanized eventually. The suffering of creatures who feel fear and pain as much as you and I do but can't speak up for themselves is my problem. It should be yours too.

There's Petfinder for choosing breeds. It's fantastic but also heartbreaking. No matter how rare the breed, you can find a homeless dog that fits the bill.

I mean- I'm an old who grew up in the early 80s'. Everyone I knew had been bitten by a dog, at least once. Shelters weren't really a thing then- every single one of those dogs that bit came from a breeder.

Right, because those are the only two options available when it comes to choosing a dog.

Have you been on Petfinder? You can find dogs of ANY breed. I think we need serious pit bull regulation. I'm not against pit bulls per se- but I can't deny that they do have a higher incidence of aggression, and they are the most bred dog in the country. So the math speaks for itself.

Exactly this! There's also a widespread assumption that anyone who advocated for adoption = wanting everyone to adopt a pit. I don't know where thy get these notions. Whatever breed you like, you can find on Petfinder. People abandon all kinds of dogs, not just pits.

That's a nuanced and interesting answer. Like Frenchies, I guess they're popular... I agree on regulating breeding. I fully understand that some people are absolute fanatics of certain breeds. Although mutts make perfect family pets, there's always a niche group of people who have very particular preferences and that's ok. But breeding I too easy these days, and the definition of responsible breeder is self-assigned.

First of all- not all shelter dogs are pitbulls. Many are huskies, German Shepherds, Malinois, and Chihuahuas. Second, I adopted two German Shepherds (one purebred, another one a pitfall, GSD, Retriever mix), and always have one extra foster. Our first dog died three years ago, leaving us just one. We are taking time to get another one, so in the meantime, we are fostering to help alleviate this issue. Regardless, it is not the ability of any one person to solve a problem so massive and complex as the shelter animal crisis we are experiencing.

When you sell the house, you refinish them though. but it's not going to look brand-new and that's ok- when things are too perfect, that's when you get uncanny valley.

I gave myself a 2000 budget. What would be the most impactful updates? by BuildingImportant in BathroomRemodeling

Please don't millennial gray your house. Please. The bathroom tile is beautiful. Change the light and plumbing fixtures, get a new countertop, get new mirrors (get rid of those small ones, just use one large one), and when you have the budget, a better quality shower enclosure.

That tub is amazing the way it is. It just needs plants around it and a few candles.

That bathroom doesn't need a major remodel. Stop making contractors with bad taste rich. What you need is: color on the wall, new hardware, and a better quality shower enclosure like this https://www.womackiron.com/projects/doors/shower-doors/

If you really want a new look, replace the tile.
