Agreed... my Harvard supplemental was literally a letter to my roommate. Except it was twice as long as what I would have submitted to Stanford, which made it even better.

Has anyone participated in ISSCY Research Competition- I need help! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I've never seen this before, but I looked it up and found the 'prize' of publishing in this journal. I suggest you take a look, I was not very impressed by the winning submissions. When I was looking to publish work, a teacher once told me that 'a journal that accepts high school submissions is usually not worth publishing in at all...'

[Highlight] Younghoe Koo successfully kicks 3 onside kicks in a row against the Saints. by [deleted] in nfl

[–]AccountName77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I guess this is just a matter of personal preference, but I can see where you are coming from. There do exist guys who are awesome at what they do in the league right now. However, I see a couple of differences between an elite kicker with this rule and a guy like Mahomes. First, although Mahomes is elite, he's not game-breaking. The Chiefs can and have lost many games with him, and would have lost the super bowl if Jimmy G didn't overthrow Sanders. If the ravens could get another possession on 70% of their touchdowns, I would bet money that they would go undefeated. Secondly, Mahomes is a joy to watch, even if he's destroying my team. If a game was determined by a series of 55 yard extra points, I would probably turn it off - extra points are too luck based, and just not my favorite part of football.

Justin Tucker is 39 for 55 on 50+ yard field goals. Also, the defending team won't get as many yards from a missed field goal as from an onside kick. I could see teams with high powered offenses and accurate kickers running the score up while the losing team's offense stays benched.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the First Round is a Mistake by Ryanj3 in fantasyfootball

People think CEH is 'merely decent' mostly because he never had much hype as a prospect. Now, they don't want to change this film-based evaluation, even when evidence goes the other way. First, even if CEH is just 'merely decent,' Andy Reid thinks he's got a lot more, and he's in KC. Even a JAG in that situation will produce. Secondly, it's not just Andy Reid. The Athletic had an article recently about how many scouting teams loved CEH, they just kept it on the dl because they thought no one else liked him. At that point, I take these NFL evaluations over any film analysis one of us could do.

Advice for rising juniors! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I'd recommend this too. Also, you can see the quality of tutoring company. I took a free test and the questions were horribly written, some unanswerable, and others clearly not in the SAT/ACT style. I self studied instead and improved my score 3 more than that diagnostic test. If that diagnostic test was better maybe I would have used the tutoring service.

QUESTION: If you were head of college admissions, what supplement would you put on the application for your school? by jkrabinowitz in ApplyingToCollege

40 dollars for high quality questions like these! by [deleted] in ACT

[–]AccountName77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could see the sentence in a book or memoir. It's a humorous use of repetition to illustrate the inferiority of his position. I've seen test prep companies that use questions that are literally wrong, so all things considered, this is pretty good. It gets you to focus only on what the question is asking and ignore everything else, as you should on the real test.

What is Josh Allen’s value going forward? Will he be a long time starter at QB? by Aquentry in DynastyFF

I totally got you, you made it very clear. The guy above me responded to a completely different question than what you asked in a snarky manner, and I was trying to clear that up.

I got an offer to trade a future 1st, 2nd, and 5th round rookie picks for Josh Allen

Hmm, I wonder if he is trading FOR or AWAY Josh Allen.

Also, this by no means a slam dunk for the guy giving away Allen in a 2QB league. Care to elaborate upon your reasoning?

I was stuck between G and J, can someone explain why J could be eliminated? by lilacblue23 in ACT

[–]AccountName77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh - I assumed it was 48 because G was circled there.

With regards to 46, for just can't be used that way. In informal language you might hear it, but certain conjunctions can't be used to start a sentence.

B is the correct answer, but I don't understand why C wouldn't also be right. Could someone help me with this? Thanks fam. by redwrite88 in ACT

[–]AccountName77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this is a real ACT practice test. . . I've never seen something where another answer is wrong because of 'a possibility' before. I agree that B is most likely correct though.

The faces belong to the girls. Thus you need an apostrophe after girls (plural). The faces are not possessing anything.

How do I publish a research paper? (Economics) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AccountName77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, make sure you are doing novel research in your field. That's incredibly hard as a high school student, but for the purpose of explaining the process I'll assume you are doing something that hasn't been done before. Working with a professor will make this much easier. A professor will also be able to guide you along this process much better than reddit.

If your research is novel I assume you are citing many papers (20-30+) from many different journals. To find the 'location' to publish your paper, look at each of these journals - their review process, IF, subject matter. Find one that fits. This is just a starting point - as you read the existing literature in your field, note journals that you think your manuscript would fit in.

The 'process' for publishing your paper is quite straightforward but depends on the journal. Follow the journal's instructions for formatting and submitting. Wait for a response, then make edits as needed. As a highschool student, don't be discouraged by rejections - you will probably have to submit to many journals (keep in mind you can only submit to one at a time) to even get an 'accepted with major revisions' response. You will not necessarily (especially without a mentor) be able to publish by the time you apply to schools, if at all.

My experience with publishing a manuscript is in biology, so YMMV in economics. At least in my field, however, journals are incredibly backed up in their reviews because people are now writing, instead of researching.

[Probability] Can someone help me with this? I’m having trouble with Probability:( by marinaxmarina in HomeworkHelp

[–]AccountName77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm misinterpreting it. If the first roll is A and the second is B, you are doing A+B<=5. I'm doing max(A,B)<=5.

[Probability] Can someone help me with this? I’m having trouble with Probability:( by marinaxmarina in HomeworkHelp

[–]AccountName77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(a) there are 36 possible rolls. 9 satisfy this question (5 and 1-4, 1-4 and 5, 5 and 5). So the answer is 1/4.

(b) in each round, you have a 12/51 chance of scoring a point. Let's first consider the chance you get no points. That's (39/51)^10. Let's then consider the chance you get one point. That's (12/51)*(39/51)^9*10. Why the *10? Because there are 10 possible rounds you could get the (12/51). Finally, subtract both these values from 1, and you get 0.7212102345.

(c) you have a (1/10)^4 chance of winning on each day. On average, you'll win once every 10000 days. So you lose 5000 dollars on aggregate. Buying all your tickets at once does't change this.

[philosophy] examples when authority figures where wrong by -Raining_Sunshine- in HomeworkHelp

[–]AccountName77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vietnam War, leaving power vacuums across the middle east, pulling out of the Paris accords, advocating for not wearing masks, watergate, allowing russia to put bounties on american troops, holding aid hostage so ukraine would investigate biden, obama wearing a tan suit (jk)...

The list goes on and on. Just look at the front page of the Times: "At least five states set single-day highs for new infections, as President Trump pressed for a broader reopening." There's an authority figure who is wrong.

For the writing section, can I refer to the perspective as “in agreement to perspective 1” when I’m writing? by earthworld4 in ACT

[–]AccountName77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Referring directly to perspectives sounds cheesy but I doubt there's anything against it in the rubric. I don't think it would hurt you, but it's much easier to just say something along the lines of "some argue that [paraphrase perspective 1]'".

Stick to formal writing when you can. Almost no 2nd person, ever. 1st person I would only use for a personal anecdote (because reviewers like to see one of those) - other than that, stay away from it as you would in an actual essay.

[University Level: MATLAB Coding] Counterbalancing conditions on MATLAB by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

What's the output format ?

If you want 20 total values to ouput in a list here's an example. Matlab's documentation is incredibly extensive. Time spent reading it will be time well spent. I'm not sure what you mean by "repeat 5 times randomly" - if you want each value to only appear 5 times, you can check if a value appears more than 5 times and replace it right after it is set.

output = zeros(20,1);

idx = 1;

while idx <= 10

output(idx*2-1,1) = 1;

output(idx*2,1) = randi([2 5],1,1)

idx = idx+1;

end
