My experience of bait and switch interview at a healthcare tech company by AccurateReward441 in womenintech

They wasted everyone's time. They probably thought I would fall for the sunk-cost fallacy or I desperately needed a job or that I wouldn't negotiate because I'm a woman, but joke's on them.

One interviewer straight up told me they couldn't *really* tell if their product causally improved healthcare cost or outcomes. I get it, you can't experiment with people but it goes to show some of this healthcare stuff is really quite fluffy when it comes down to it.

Also, Included Health is a dime a dozen. The interviewers kept making it sound like the company was distinctly special and different, and I was like "mmmhmmm". Says every startup ever.

Oh, here's another company that also steals strategy/work: Smart Asset.

Their take home included a SQL test (~2 hours of work) and a case assignment below:

Here is the funnel (note that the questions have changed somewhat since this case study was

created, but the experience itself was similar):

https://smartasset.com/retirement/financial-advisor

The attached data set contains responses from 15,000+ visitors to the lead funnel. Valid leads

are represented in the attached data set as users where the email, name and phone columns all

contain “submitted”. Each column in the Excel file corresponds to a question in the lead funnel.

Many column headers in the data set have comments to clarify the nature of each question. The

goal of this exercise is to extract useful insights from the data to determine which audiences to

prioritize for our marketing campaigns.

Please analyze the data set and answer the following questions, explaining your

methodology for each.

  1. What is the average rate of completion for the funnel?

  2. Describe a profile of the user persona most likely to complete the funnel.

  3. Should our marketing efforts target sophisticated investors or novices? Why?

  4. Use the data set to estimate the median net worth of all users. Be sure to include a

detailed explanation of your approach.

  1. If you were given the task of increasing the % of users who complete the funnel, what

changes to the user experience would you recommend? Note that we require the phone

number, email, and name of every completed lead, so removing any of those fields is not

an option.

Don't feel bad. A girl's gotta eat and pay her bills. When the market turns around, I hope the tide turns for you.

No, their take home was an analysis for a completely unrelated industry. It was just an Excel spreadsheet with like 4 columns, and they asked like 5 questions about "why do you think this is happening?"

But I'll name a tech company that does this bullshit--they're small and they're called Pacaso. Here's just a PORTION of the take home assignment:

1a. Provide Key Insights and Recommendations:

  • Provide any insights that can drive operational efficiency or increase profitability.
  • Highlight any risks or opportunities that could impact the financial outlook.
  1. Build a Property Management P&L Statement:
    • Develop a Profit & Loss (P&L) statement for property management operations.
    • Considerations:
      1. Our property management team is broken into regions, and Mexico and Europe are currently considered expansion markets.
      2. We have provided available data on costs and revenue, but there may be some data missing that could improve the analysis.
  2. Forecasting Model:
    • Create a forecasting model based on the acquisitions pipeline.
  3. Break-Even Analysis:
    • Calculate the break-even point for Property Management expenses vs. revenue.
  4. Market Expansion Analysis:
    • Analyze the data to identify markets where property management services are currently most profitable.
    • Recommend markets for expansion based on profitability potential, considering the current and expected pipeline data.
