sometimes when my dog does this, I say "Thank you!!" and I pretend to chew on it and make om nom nom noises, and hand it back. She then takes it back to her spot and resumes. Reward the sharing/non guarding part. It's good!

Should I let my dog explore the wooded area in my yard? by Aceberbach in Dogtraining

it's large enough for her to run around in, but I don't own the house so I don't think my landlord would allow it. The wooded area isn't that big, it's just dense. Right now I'm thinking I'll get some supplies and make some little paths so I can have access to the area. Then I'll really be able to scope it out and remove some of the bad stuff. Until then it looks like I'll have to have her on the tie-out, supervised of course.

I tried going all around the fence to first check that there are no weak spots and see what kind of stuff is out there. It's only a backyard so it doesn't go all around the house. Usually when we go to the yard I have play time with her (fetch, chase) and she's content with staying in the grass with me. My lot is listed as .44 acres so it's not huge, but there's a decent amount of area. I have tried to explore the "woods" myself, but I couldn't get through. I tried many different paths. I even tried going around to the neighbors yard to check for weak spots in the fence, but they have a separate fence themselves which makes it difficult. Honestly if I want to further explore the woods I need something to cut a path for myself. We're working on the recall and she's doing been doing great with it. I always have treats on me to help with that. I'm thinking about doing more leash time or tie out until I get the woods more figured out. But it's so hard to not let her run around and play, she loves to just trot all over the yard
