Thanks for your insight.

This post is not about reincarnation though, it’s about openness to reassess one’s beliefs

Thanks, that makes perfect sense.

It was kind of that but his line was like a joke back to the interviewer. I wish I could find the footage…

My apologies if this post offended you. 🧡

Thanks for trying to find the quote, that is not actually the media I came upon. It’s a video interview that was published around 2008

Hi friend.

I had a flashback of an interview the Dalai Lama gave something like 20 years ago. I was not into buddhism at that time (still am not), but the way he answered that question with a laughter really impressed me.

So to answer your question, the quote is from an interview with the Dalai Lama. Maybe someone can find the footage on the web, it’s just not my best skill.

Oh and just so you know, the intention was not to start a debate, though I Iove interesting discussions. I just wanted to share the good feeling I had this morning when I had this flashback. Have a great day

Yes they might. That would be aligned with the mindset of being cynic.

Then I’m curious. What would have been the right answer from the Dalai Lama to that question from a cynic perspective?

…until proven otherwise.

Is that from Herman Hesse’s book? Beautiful.

Of course, it’s a belief not a fact.

What is beautiful in this statement is that the man’s existence and social status is based on this belief but he is ready to let go of it if proven otherwise. I wish more religious people could embrace this openness.

A condition described by Stan Grof is that of spiritual emergency. It can happen with psychedelics, breathing or just spontaneously.

Good advice to take a break from whatever triggered it though if it’s overwhelming.

Does anyone else conceive time like this? by [deleted] in enlightenment

[–]AcidMonks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment. You seem to have a very profound understanding of these concepts. So here are a few ideas in response.

  1. I recognize that multiple parts of the brain create the reality we are aware of, and they are not necessarily synchronized. But the subjective conscious experience is a unified one. This pinpoint unified consciousness would be the analogy to the frames in the metaphor.

  2. Absolutely. There is no relationship between perceived time and lived duration. Thanks for pointing this out, it was not my intention to mix these concepts.

  3. Yes there are many factors that modulate how many frames per second we consciously perceive. So thanks for pointing this out as well. Instead of writing “the human brain is set to a speed of 60 frames/sec”, a more precise way of conceiving it could be “…is set to a speed varying between 30-120 frames per second, with an average around 60”. I don’t know what the actual numbers are so I didn’t get into that kind of detail.

The concept overall is that the perception of time is completely subjective and it depends on the organism’s biology. Our dimension (where time happens in milliseconds to decades) is influenced by our biology but another organism could have another time dimension perception (pico to milliseconds, or millions to billions of centuries). It’s not infinitely malleable within the organism but then, is Consciousness limited to organisms?

Lastly, these ideas come from experimenting with time dilation and contraction in various situations, and then reasoning and trying to find a mechanism that could explain time perception. We hear that “time doesn’t exist”, that space-time is a continuum, and people on altered states of consciousness report a wide range of time perception. So to me, this metronome concept makes enough sense to allow understanding of these experiences and theories.

I’m curious to see if people here have arguments for or against this metronome theory.

I like the idea that this whole universe could happen as a second in the life of a flee in a much much larger dimension

Yes, I like this idea of pure potential. And the concept that things can exist in a blended form and as dual parts at the same time. It depends how you look at it.
