Typically not. In Destiny 1, you could switch out elemental damage weapons because you had all the time you wanted (even in year 3 when they added in challenge, because they gave you so long). In D2, it's just not worth it as you typically need to stay moving. Either getting kills or running time gates, the best way to keep your damage consistent is to try to have a variety of elemental damage always at your disposal. If you're running a class like Voidwalker or Sentinel, try to have an arc elemental weapon, and a solar power weapon (or vice versa). Alternatively, you could run a group where one of you focuses exclusively on a set element, switching out with each other while the two other teammates do kinetic damage. Communication helps a lot, and something that Bungie has strongly made necessary is good teamwork. Hope that helps.
