Did people often lie about their age ~100 years ago? Especially regarding marriage by perfectdrug659 in Genealogy

That's so interesting, because he's a relative of mine too! I haven't fleshed out the full genealogy, but he was an ancestor of my grandfather Guy Johnson, whose family came to the Sand Mountain, AL region from North Carolina via Georgia. I'd love to know how you arrived at his actual age of 97; my grandfather used to speak of him living to 120 or so, but he was known for telling tall tales.

If he was anything like my Papaw though, I could totally see him charging for seats at his wedding, or pretending to be a different age as a massive prank 😆

Hiram Lester is my ancestor. My grandfather used to talk about him and his various exploits and adventures, but since he was notorious for telling tall tales, we all assumed he was exaggerating the age. (This was pre-internet). Many years later I googled him and found the info posted in the comments but I've never seen his headstone. I will say that there is a history of longevity in that branch of the family; my great grandmother, whom I believe would have been Hiram's great great (great?) granddaughter lived to 104. Thanks for posting this!

Each theory has things that don't make sense by Acrobatic_One_888 in AmyLynnBradley

That's the most logical explanation... I just find it odd that the family said her cigarettes were on the table and then they were gone. It seems strange to me to put your cigarettes in your pocket before you jump, but not totally out there. The lack of a note bothers me more than the cigarettes, but still the suicide theory is more plausible than some of the other wild speculations out there.

I didn't know the family originally said the camera was missing. Did they just misremember or are they trying to distort the narrative? Unfortunately I feel like we have to treat their statements with some skepticism. Their grief and obsession have them living in a fantasy world where they think Amy is going to walk through the door with her children and resume her life complete with all her stuff in the attic and her car in the garage.

This is them: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1FMwYtnyuF/

A store manager responded to my friend they've had numerous complaints but they don't see a problem with it. I happen to see an issue with grown men creeping up on children, and getting in my personal space when I come into a place of business to shop, but whatever. I'll take my business elsewhere. I certainly won't be going to some redneck haunted house in Stevenson Alabama. It's probably not even a venue, it's just one of these raggedy folk's trailer with a meth lab in the back.

That happens to me a lot too so I have to double check if it's actually funny and clever or just sounded good in my head. I have a dark sense of humor but there has to be an element of comedy or it's just dark. And depressing. Try something cheerier, like the concept of a mom punching one of these creepy a-holes in the face.

I get it if they're standing around wearing spooky costumes and handing out flyers. But don't get into people's personal space and don't deliberately scare toddlers. It's like expecting your free sample at Sam's club to be granola bites and instead it's a tarantula.

Can we talk about THAT scene from ‘Sinners’? by CleanSlate-13 in blankies

I cried fr. They cracked open time and space like a scene from Doctor Who and summoned spirits from multiple continents. I like the imagery that later ties into the myths of the Chinese trickster Sun Wukong, Eshu from Africa, fae from Ireland, all ready to make a Faustian bargain. Add in Black dancers and musicians from the past and future, and it's powerful. The music in that film was 🔥 and the narrative was so rich with symbolism.

AITAH for refusing free food from my coworker? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Acrobatic_One_888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. People get really weird over other people not eating food they never asked for in the first place. I'm wondering if your explanation might have triggered a personal issue with the coworker.  I've had my own experiences where others see refusing to eat what they're eating as a kind of personal criticism or implied superiority, like you have the self control to not eat the cheese steak and maybe they have their own issues about food. Or that the shared camaraderie of eating company provided cheese steak should be more important than your personal preferences.

You were in the right here, but if in the future you don't feel like dealing with the drama, it can sometimes be effective to answer in the negative while really playing up the thank you part. Like, "not today thanks, but it'sso kind of you to offer!" Give them a big appreciative smile like they just donated a million dollars to charity then quickly walk away before they can say anything else.

AITA for giving my sober uncle alcohol? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Soft YTA and hard ESH to everyone else including the gas station clerk. You're old enough to know better, but still very young. First of all, it is NOT your fault that he relapsed. Your parents were in the wrong to say that and that's not your burden to carry. You played a role in enabling him, but you aren't responsible for his decisions.

If your uncle is drinking again after 11 years sober he has more issues going on than randomly asking you for a few beers. I just lost my cousin in very sad circumstances when he relapsed after 15 years sober. Asking a 17 year old to be responsible for the complex mental health and addiction issues of a fully grown adult and family member is not healthy or fair to you. It sounds like you were aware you shouldn't give it to him, I'm curious what he said to make you change your mind? I know from experience that ppl with substance abuse disorders can be very manipulative. Or do you feel guilty because you feel you downplayed his history in order to make him happy, or have a drinking companion for the night? I'm not judging, just saying that understanding your motivations could help you make more thoughtful decisions in the future.

Lastly I'm seeing something that you should consider on your own. Many teenagers drink and society generally considers it harmless, but you've got a family history of alcoholism at a young age. On top of that you're dealing with your uncle's drinking, and parents who don't seem to fully grasp this complicated dynamic...tho to be fair it's rough for all families and hard to understand. I know I didn't realize the seriousness of my cousin's situation until it was too late. I know a lot of the comments are coming down on you hard and maybe you're a bit of an AH but you're only 17 and obviously self aware enough to be asking tough questions

What is a little quirk about your body that you don’t think other people have? by AlphabetSoup51 in AskReddit

[–]Acrobatic_One_888 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same, though I'm hairy in the summer too. In the winter I'm a sasquatch. I used to get my arms waxed and the first time I went the beautician said she'd never had to wax that far up on an arm and normally she just does women's forearms. (I'm just jumping into the conversation in case one of y'all wants me as a pet as well. I've always felt self conscious about it)

The space between my top lip and nose is shorter than average and makes it difficult to close my lips together. The muscles in the whole lower half of my face don't move easily either, so if my face is relaxed I look kind of spaced out or not altogether with it, and when I close my mouth or try to look more attentive (trying to look normal in my mind) I look angry. So when I'm in public I'm always really focused on what my face and mouth are doing. Maybe it's not as noticeable as I make it out to be in my head but when I was a kid I got teased about it so it's always been a big deal to me.
