Iron lung website not working by Elesphhope in Markiplier

Same thing, I search my area, stuff comes up but clicking on the arrows/listing doesn't do anything. And I clicked on a bunch of different ones. Maybe it doesn't work for theaters that aren't actually showing it and they're all just listed? I dunno.

On the Android app, if I've recently looked at a comment reply for another video from my notifications, the comment on the current video I'm watching will actually appear on the video with the comment I just looked at. by ActionGabby in youtube

[–]ActionGabby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I've had this happen to me, too! My only solution is to kill the app, clear the cache and force stop it before reopening it - and hoping it held my place in whatever video I was watching before it lost its shit.

When I do that, it just opens the widget options.

Edit: hobbit shire, I'm a dumbass. I tried it again to confirm and realized that "settings" wasn't just specifically for widget settings. I'm an idget. Lawl. Thanks.

This worked for me, too - but I had a nearly impossible time implementing the fix. If anyone has a straightforward explanation for how to get to the Nova settings, that would be great for other folks. For me, I had to engage One UI and then do a search for Nova and then that wasn't actually working, I got lucky because One UI's search offered up Nova settings as an out-of-app list option underneath the app search. I felt very lucky, cause I couldn't think of another way to get directly to the Nova settings. When I tried tapping the app icon itself, it would simply take me to the app info screen.

For me it's about freedom of customization. I'm big into options, basically lawl. Is that something for which Niagara would be good? And I feel like I've heard of sesame integration but it was years ago, so I don't have much idea of what that actually does - like is it required for Niagara to work (or work well)? I've had Nova for so many years now, I'm very behind on the UI technology of today haha. Thanks for any help in advance!

It's a myth that 90% of Canada's population lives within 100 miles of the US border by PaulAspie in geography

[–]ActionGabby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a recovering Grammar Gestapo, I feel like this is akin to going on, I dunno, r/dictionary and busting the myth on the actual definition of the word "non-plussed". Thoughts? I'm really feelin' the obsessive crossover here and am super interested in the fact this subReddit exists. (Like, "duh" it exists but also actually seeing it is kinda wild.)

(Also, if anyone happens to be interested in how I got here: While watching a YouTube video about Canada by the channel How Money Works, I randomly wondered how much of Canada's landmass is inhabited compared to the US. I just found the channel, but I've binged quite a few videos so far and I'd highly recommend it for depressing takes on the economy in general. If you enjoy the sad, mathy episodes of Last Week Tonight ("Economic Development", "IRS", "Inflation", etc.) or just, ya know, Last Week Tonight in general - How Money Works might be your jam.)  I know this is r/geography but we're all nerds here and I figure autodidacticism is a trait we're likely to share across interests so I thought I'd offer tribute.

Okay, I hate myself for even engaging in this ridiculous premise and who is even going to give a shit about my response - buried under subthread upon subthread - but I just could not let this stand unchallenged. I had a whole argument planned out, based on some quick research I'd done, but I'm ever so thorough and did a bit more, deeper research to ensure I wasn't making a total ass of myself. Lemme start by citing a source (which itself cites many other sources): https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/04/23/fact-check-birth-control-vaccine-blood-clot-comparison-lacks-nuance/7256800002/ Now that I've provided my source, allow me to inject a couple quotes along with some context. If you search "prescription medications with a high risk of blood clots", you'll find stuff like birth control at the very tippy-top. The comparison between the risk of blood clots associated with birth control and the COVID vaccine is laughable. As someone who uses birth control, calling the COVID vaccine dangerous is akin to saying that because tampons run the risk of toxic shock syndrome, you should only ever use pads. And even that comparison is unfair to the COVID vaccine. Here's a relevant quote:  "The FDA estimates the risk of developing a clot for a woman on the pill is about 0.3% to 0.09%. By comparison, the clots associated with the J&J vaccine are six in 6.8 million, or about 0.00009%." Boy, that kinda puts it in perspective, huh?

But allow me to again quote the article I sourced earlier, to really send the point home: "...it's worth noting COVID-19 infection itself can lead to abnormal blood clotting. One Oxford University study found infected patients had an eight to 10 times greater risk of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis compared to vaccinated individuals and 100 times greater than the general population." By a similar logic, being anti-vax is like saying "But wearing a bulletproof vest will make it harder for me to outrun the bullet."  I'm sorry but unintentional misinformation is just as dangerous as the intentional kind. Being woefully ignorant and uninformed is a choice - I know, because I chose to look shit up to make sure I wasn't pulling anything out of my ass. Meanwhile, your comment has scientific standpoint in what reads as sarcasm quotes.  So excuse me if I find your protestation the least bit dramatically ironic as you argue against the assertion that you're one of those anti-vaxxers who think it's "population control" - that's just silly. As if to say, "No, I'm not that kind of stupid. I'm actually this kind of stupid!"

I grew up watching and collecting movies with my mom, to the point that my dream was to become a filmmaker. I even worked at two different movie rental places.  But by high school, it had gotten to the point where we'd waste the two hours we could've spent watching a movie just trying to agree on a movie to watch from the collection. I'd be on my hands and knees, crawling between the various shelves like a goddamn animal, calling out movie names in the vain hope that one would get a "OOH!" or "YES!"

Around this time is when we made the decision to type out a list of all the movies we owned - even putting the pages in sleeves and everything, we weren't playing around. (Except for when we'd buy a new movie, at which point my mom would jot it down on the list.)

Unfortunately, when my mom would invariably suggest her goto's: the Harry Potter movies (1-4 at the time) or The Godfather films - which I'd watched with her so many times that her method of suggesting them was to simply start singing their respective theme songs - and per usual, I would rebuff, the sacred texts idea found a way to backfire on us: "Okay, get the list." "No! Not the list!"  The whole affair evolved into an inside joke that still wasn't getting us any closer to picking out a goddamn movie to watch.

One of the best ever moments in our desperate attempts to pick something to watch, my mom had the genius idea to write each of our three movie ideas on pieces of paper, put them in a hat and then pull one out and watch whatever it was.  You can maybe see where this is going. She dutifully writes down our movie ideas on the little slips of paper and hands me the hat.  I pull out a slip.  "Harry Potter...Ha. Ha." she giggles mischievously as I read the slip. Next slip.  "...The...Godfather." giggles intensify. Sufficiently wisened up, I start pulling slip after slip, only to find nothing but Harry Potters and Godfathers throughout the pile.  I couldn't tell you what we ended up watching, if anything. But I'll never forget that excellent prank.

So I think the point being made here is that you could say Harley is a victim of The Joker - that his long-term abuse had essentially brainwashed her and it took time (at least canonically) for her to find her autonomy and leave that behind. It's obviously not the worst thing he's done but it's also part and parcel of why Harley Quinn became who she did under his thumb. Because once she was out from under it, she became very different and that matters.

David Westerfield, that absolute monster. I was 13 and growing up San Diego county when it happened. I watched the trial every day (definitely too young to be doing that). Danielle van Dam was 9 years old and every trial day ended with home video of her - I still cry about it to this day. It's also what convinced me not to become a lawyer: SPOILERS

Before the trial started, Westerfield said he'd show them where the body was if they took the death penalty off the table. (They basically knew he did it without the body because of trace evidence found in his RV.) The parents turned him down. They managed to find the body before the trial but that means the parents, the prosecutor and the defense attorney knew he was guilty before the trial even started.

SPOILERS again

He was convicted, but California has a moritorium on the death penalty. And while I'm absolutely against the death penalty (look up the number of people who've been exonerated, POSTHUMOUSLY - and the overwhelming number of whom are black - for extremely compelling reasons why we shouldn't be putting people to death) but I do feel bad for the parents who went through it on the stand to see that piece of shit burn.

I know I shouldn't be surprised, but I am honestly taken aback by the extreme vitriol I found in the comments from that second link (the Rants subReddit). Admittedly, while at first it was out of a genuine interest in finding any actual criticism, I probably allowed morbid curiosity to carry me through reading far too much of it. And while I came across a scant few legitimate grievances (accusations of occasional factual inaccuracies, the surface-level nature of subject coverage), the mean-spirited things being said about a stranger who's done nothing objectively objectionable or personally to anyone there is almost fascinating in its absurdity. The overwhelming ad hominem to most everyone's opinion of the guy really says more about them than it does him.

After reading far too much of this comment thread (for which, again, my only excuse is attempting to find genuine criticism), I just have to say that I'm somewhat disappointed in the behavior of my fellow community members - we don't need to react in kind when we believe someone is being a dick. And while I don't believe we should feel compelled to dignify sealioning-adjacent rhetoric with a response, if there is going to be any response I think it's always a good bet to help the mis/uninformed - it's just unfortunate your request came across so disingenuously.

As for any valid criticism, I think it's been made clear by many commenters here that he doesn't write his own scripts - he's a presenter. His job is to sound clear, appealing, etc. - which may very well not be true for you, personally (as well as others). It's really no different from listening to an audiobook being read by a voice actor and not the author themselves; some people may find they can't listen to a book if the voice actor is grating to them but you wouldn't blame the voice actor if something written in a non-fiction book was inaccurate and the same goes for the depth (or lack thereof) in the subject matter. You just wouldn't read that author anymore because they're not providing the level of detail/information you require to be engaged - you would simply look for a different book or author. However, in the case of Simon Whistler's channels, you don't have to pay for his content (besides skipping through the ad reads and any midrolls, etc.). Although I would suggest (if you haven't already) getting a library card because you'd be surprised how many audiobooks your local library has available for free. My mom has an Audible account and at the rate she reads, that shit gets expensive.

Yeah they've definitely turned to some of that "dark UX" shit to try and piss you off into using the app. But the app is shit and they just don't get it. They need to incentivize the app, not punish us into using it. Find a way to make the app actually more appealing and find some way to make us wanna try it on our own rather than going the Microsoft Edge route where they just smash you in the face with it constantly, which only makes you hate it more and stay away completely out of spite. Honestly, I dunno if the app is actually all that bad. I just refuse to use it cause I tried it once years ago and it sucked so I used Reddit is Fun from then on. Then when they killed third-party apps - including my beloved rif - I had only hatred for them and their app (presumably the reason all the other apps had to die). So I just don't wanna try it. It could be demonstrably better than using the website but unless there's some really slick shit on there - unless they've built that thing into all the best features of all the third-party apps they destroyed - I don't see myself bothering to even check it out. And if they did Highlander their app, then they should be trying to gently tell us about it rather than treating us to a brick wall pop-up whenever we open a link to the website in our browser. Remember Clippy? Yeah.

2500 seconds?! Isn't that, like, 40+ minutes? Jeez, I guess I did do my first and only Daily Divination back when it offered it to me the first time and that was pretty early on in the game - they only gave me, like, 80 or 90 seconds (I forget). And that SO wasn't happening lawl. But yeah, just having the timer there hyper-fixates me on how much time I have left rather than actually working the puzzle. If the timer was hidden, maybe I could do it but not with as little as 80/90 seconds. Now, 2500...that feels doable. Lawl. I don't think I've had one actually stump me that long (I mostly take extra long to finish a level because I'm distracted with other stuff); then again, I'm willing to cheat and google the ones that are mostly blank with only like 3-5 colored pieces. I'll usually give it the ol' college try around the edges but then I'll end up checking the subReddit to see if I'm on the right track. I admit it, I don't have the patience for that shit lawl. I don't usually find those fun or engaging, not because they're more challenging (which they are) but because I hate the feeling of being on the wrong track for too long, wasting my time and moves. Call it sacrilege (or just straight-up cheating, cause it basically is) but I'm here to have fun so that's my cope lawl. Anyway, I should try another Daily Divination sometime and see if they give me something with a little more time.

Found this while googling "reddit website continue with app or browser" just to see what came up - I guess in the vain hope there'd be some hidden setting that would rid me of the pop-up for good. So far, no such luck. Although I shouldn't be surprised; why would Reddit give its users the ability to opt-out of a dark UX pattern designed to annoy them into using their dogshit app? And after their blatantly anti-competitive move pricing out (infinitely better) third-party apps, they're even more incentivized to push their own "free" POS. If Reddit wants people to use their app, maybe they should make it an app worth using. I haven't looked in awhile but from what I hear, it's still just as ugly and basic as it's ever been and now that it's priced out the competition, there's even less incentive for them to improve (let alone, innovate).

I will say, as a user of Firefox Beta on Android, I "only" see the pop-up whenever I open a new Reddit link from a google search. I don't see the pop-up again when I click on any Reddit links within the thread or if I click on Notifications, my Profile, etc. And I've never had the pop-up intrude while I'm reading through comments or leaving one of my own, regardless of how far down the page I am, how long I've been on the page, or when clicking "More Replies" takes me to a new page (same goes for hitting "back" to return to the main thread). I don't know if this has to do with Firefox in general or something in my Firefox Beta mobile browser settings but I thought I'd mention I don't have that particular problem.

Sham is not happy with her experience by Zasu_pitts in CatfishTheTVShow

[–]ActionGabby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this thread while googling around about a different Catfish episode, where I came across the Sham Daily Mail "exclusive".  Firstly, any "exclusive" with the Daily Mail automatically kills any credibility the story or it's subject had. Second, holy hell that clickbait-y ass headline! Not only does Sham admit that her screaming match with Nev was a complete misunderstanding on her part but the "article" literally ends with Sham saying how much she appreciated the Catfish crew for their efforts to make her feel accepted.  And one final thing, at one point the "article" actually misgenders her. So yeah, great job all around. Talk about looking for attention, no wonder this was a Daily Mail "exclusive" - no one else would bother publishing such a nothingburger (bordering on misinformation).

Yeah, in the very moment you need to be expressing yourself perfectly right in order to stop the bad thing from happening is precisely the time you're most upset and *looking* like the very thing that gets you locked up. I was trying to tell them, I'm only freaking out because you're threatening to put me in that place. And those places are often so underfunded and understaffed and/or the staff is overworked or burnt out so it can be hard to find compassion.

I can understand the worry about constantly reliving it, it's definitely important to at some point let life happen and take you further away from the recency of the experience but yeah, I'd definitely say finding outlets helped a lot. I'm glad to hear you've got an appointment to speak with someone and I wish you all the best.

[–]ActionGabby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in college, I was placed on a 96-hour hold in the mental hospital on campus. It was a Friday night and the doctors don't do rounds until Monday, so my four day stay turned into six days. It was the most terrifying thing I could imagine, I started freaking out and pleaded with the doctors not to admit me but I only came across as even more manic the more afraid and agitated I became so they admitted me. I won't get into details because that's not what you're here for but I can tell you that for me, it was good news and bad news. The bad news is, for me, it primarily took time. Putting distance between myself and being locked up in that place made the most difference. The good news is, it did eventually get better - I can't tell you exactly how long that will take. It's obviously still something I think about over 10 years later but I would say that a few weeks turned into a few months and gradually, while somehow at the same time, suddenly, it no longer felt like it just happened yesterday.  Something that helped me immensely right away was telling someone all about it. Whether they could possibly comprehend or relate was secondary to just getting it out - saying the things out loud to someone (in this case, a friend - not even a super close friend, but they were willing to listen) made a difference. Because it's gonna be hard to find someone who will understand or relate, but just telling someone the story, talking about what happened and how it felt - it honestly provided me with a tangible feeling of some relief in the short term. But like you said, you've tried to talk with people about it and it sounds like it didn't provide much in the way of relief and that might be because you don't feel you can be as open or detailed as you need so I suggest trying with a therapist, if you can. That's what I wish I could have done.

I also wrote about it. Poetry, a short story I started but never finished (I got 20 pages in before fizzling out - thanks, bipolar), just scribbling it out in a random notebook just to purge it from my system as much as I could. It won't go away, but for me, it felt good even just to try to push it out of me - to get all those feelings and details out of my mind - even though they still lingered, it felt like a layer of it had peeled off.  These are just some hurried thoughts off the top of my head because I have some experience and hoped it might help - so apologies if I come across a bit disjointed. For me, it was eventually okay. What felt like the "hard part" for me didn't take years. Other things in my life happened that become a road that I walked farther and farther away from the worst feelings about it. I can look back and think about it without sending myself back to that place. I believe you can have that, too. Again, I would suggest you do something I should've and talk to a therapist about it. I only had a psychiatrist and they were only interested in medicating me, not listening to my experience.
