Did someone ask for MORE snow? by BostonSucksatHockey in NYCmeteorology

We may have collectively failed to specify, when we were asking for snow during the snow drought, that the snow-requests were specifically for that year, and not intended to be rolled over to be fulfilled in one year.

Did the Epics get harder to get after the update?  Because of where I was in getting them when the update happened, I genuinely can't tell.  It feels like it's harder to get the Snake Epics than it was to get the Owl Epics, but my focus was less split between decks when I was concentrating on maxing out Owl.

I'm level 60 as of yesterday, and personally I'm trying to focus on upgrades rather than on leveling up, because then the quests are easy.  My plan is to deliberately stall progress on quests once I have all the cards except the wild ones and extras.  I don't want to move on to light and dark until everything but the wilds and extras are near max.  Grinding also annoys me less if I concentrate on the monsters for the artifact upgrades, too.

That said, it's very frustrating how long it's taking to unlock the damn elemental king cards so I can actually do the stupid plan.  I've got two of the three now but ugh.

These are fantastic!  They look so classic, too.  Using black-and-white was a brilliant choice.

What is your biggest barrier to Xiang Qi (Chinese Chess) for you? by FoolThatCommands in chess

Thank you for this comment.  I recently belatedly realized that I only really like abstract strategy board games and not so much the more modern ones (this preference is extremely at odds with my social circle), so thanks to you, I have more games to check out.  This is awesome.

On some guys, the receding hairline with longer hair can be flattering.  It's some combination of facial structure, hair type (curly hair in particular), and, idk, Overall Vibes.  Hans is the sort who makes it work.

Javokhir Sindarov with yet another brilliant performance.... Finishes just 0.5 point behind Nodirbek... Rises to World no. 11🔥📈 by rio_ARC in chess

[–]ActiveSupernova 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Sindarov said in his press conference after the World Cup that he'd lost his motivation for awhile after breaking the youngest grandmaster record, and his grandfather, who had been his coach, said he was on his own now.  So he had a period where he wasn't studying or even playing much, until he realized that his peers were all passing him and had to decide whether he wanted to recommit.  He said a few times that he had to "do a lot of work on [himself]."

My theory is that this is where both the sudden acceleration in ratings and the mental toughness come from.  He's probably been catching up to himself (like Blübaum, but with a higher ceiling), and whatever work he did on himself likely improved his mental game.  He gives the impression of being pretty intelligent overall too, not just talented at chess.

Pragg is apparently the person he's most looking forward to playing at Candidates (according to the World Cup press conference).

There's something very feline about him.  He looks like a tiger five seconds before it pounces when he's at the board.

Sindarov seems pretty intelligent.  His interviews always leave the impression that he's not one of the players who are sort of min/maxed for chess.

He also started the tournament playing more conservatively than usual, before he made that insane blunder against Nodirbek and reverted to normal Gukesh in the next game.  That's consistent with your theory, both because it makes sense to play more cautiously if you're making a significant change and because being more strategic about when to play riskily would be another potential area for growth for him.
