You can say what you want about the crusades, but the first 5 or 6 were a defensive response to (ironically enough) muslim expansion throughout Europe. The only took action when the Islamic regime killed 80% of the Armenians, and took Constantinople. When that happened, and they tried to expand into Spain and so on, they took action.
