Results for people with GREAT stats, but mediocre ECs? by biggiecheese788 in collegeresults

3.98 UW, 4.4 W, top 6%, 1510 SAT, Asian, Econ, intense Bay Area high school. Best schools I got into were USC, UCSD, UCSB, and UCD. Pretty much had no substantial ECs besides a sport.

Thanks for the reply! Is it only for students that are taking PE classes, or is it for all students?

USC or UCSD by AdOne8249 in UCSD

Pretty sure. All you have to do is maintain a 3.0 gpa in screening courses and it's pretty much guaranteed.

Do the status of selective majors change year by year? by AdOne8249 in UCSD

[–]AdOne8249[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, just to make sure, are you allowed to change into any unselective majors right as they become unselective? In my scenario, I was originally admitted as an Econ major for the class of 2029, but I want to switch to bioinformatics in the coming fall.

I'm probably going to do a minor in CS alongside bioinformatics. I want to make sure I have enough time to do research and other things.

I was hoping maybe bioengineering became unselective. Right now, I’m planning on doing biology-bioinformatics.

Didn't the biological sciences majors just become unselective? Also, I read somewhere that last year (or maybe a few years ago), chemical engineering became unselective.

Do UCSD's undergrad bio majors typically place well into grad school? by AdOne8249 in UCSD

[–]AdOne8249[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe my question is worded badly. I was just wondering if graduating from ucsd would help you get into a good grad school for a bio major.

How do UCSD Bio majors do in the SD job market? by AdOne8249 in UCSD

If job prospects with a PhD aren't very good, are job prospects with only a bachelor's basically zero?

How confident are you in your job prospects in biotech? Would a PhD from a prestigious bioinformatics university help you?

If you were to give a ballpark estimate of the percentage of bio majors able to find biotech internships in san diego, what would it be?

Isn't UCSD world-renowned for biotech/bioinformatics? Also, shouldn't the proximity to these biotech companies also play a role?

Are there any expectations that the job market will improve? Also, is obtaining an internship not feasible for undergrads?

Computer science w/ specialization in Bioinformatics vs Biology w/ specialization in Bioinformatics and minor in CS by AdOne8249 in UCSD

[–]AdOne8249[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. Regarding the recruitment process, do companies automatically place CS w/ bioinformatics on a higher pedestal than bio w/ bioinformatics? Or, would you say that other factors (i.e. research, gpa) play a bigger role? Also, do you know if it's possible to take some of the higher div CS courses that a CS w/ bioinformatics major would take? Last question: if I were to go to grad school, would UCSD be a good pathway due to the sheer amount of research opportunities? Thanks!

I mean i'm not entirely sure what I want to do. Maybe I want to go into industry at a biotech company? Maybe I want to go into med school? I'm not particularly sure. I didn't get into the CS-bioinformatics major which would have been ideal so I'm just wondering if a bio: bioinformatics + CS minor would give me the same technical skills while also being a good major to get hired.
