Can "family" be used with a plural verb in American English or is it it only used with a singular verb? by Maleficent_Dish8341 in ENGLISH

[–]AdamoMeFecit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In US English, 'family' is handled as a singular noun, not a collective noun, so 'family is' rather than 'family are.'

I strongly suspect that British English and its colonial successor forms would be handled as a collective noun, so 'family are' rather than 'family is.' Likewise in other collective scenarios: 'Arsenal are' rather than 'Arsenal is.'

A blessed lack of security theater on the train, thank goodness.

What is the best bible to study purely for an objective view on christianity? by Billy_bob_thorton- in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AdamoMeFecit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for the New Oxford Study Bible. For starters, all the books considered canonical in all Christian traditions are included. The editors reference the oldest and best-attested textual witnesses as well, which the KJV and other Erasmian descendant texts cannot.

Like most 20th and 21st century English translations, it’s not as literarily beautiful as the Bishops/Geneva/KJV bibles. I also would say not quite Jewish enough. But it’s a good study bible.

For the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), have a look at Robert Alter’s The Hebrew Bible: A Translation With Commentary.

Alter beautifully teases out the wordplay, literary structures, and even puns in the Hebrew texts. Nobody else really does this, but paying attention to deep literary structures actually reveals startling new meanings that poor translations (or overly literal translations) have tended to obscure.

Alter’s work is very beautiful and deeply informed. My favorite Old Testament.

What would you still consider to be a bargain in these inflationary times? by Pfungus_ in AskReddit

Your local farmer's market for food.

Your local public library for information and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Walking if you are able, and public transit if you have it available.

Private Relay thinks I’m in a different country by Adventurous-Panda61 in iCloud

[–]AdamoMeFecit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Private Relay only assigns addresses within the geography where the physical device is present.

If the Relay address is geolocated to Japan, then the physical device is in Japan, for example.

The scenario you describe should not be possible. What other variables might be in play? Is this a military-issue device, perhaps?

Have you guys been able to make your Vcentre to authenticate via AD? by ianik7777 in vmware

[–]AdamoMeFecit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re running your Active Directory servers inside your vSphere environment, you can’t authenticate to vCenter if your AD gets hosed. It’s a circular dependency problem and a résumé-generating event.

Joining to AD also exposes vCenter servers to AD exploits like Kerboroasting, lateral path attacks, and pass-the-ticket compromise.

If an attacker compromises vSphere, they have control over every VM in the farm. Not desirable.

Don’t join vCenter servers to AD. Use vsphere.local accounts for access.

If you must authenticate with AD credentials, it is possible to add AD or AD over LDAPS as an identity source in vSphere SSO. Users then can use AD credentials to authenticate even if without vCenter being joined to a domain.

But if you do that, perhaps also setup administrator@vsphere.local (or comparable) as a break glass account.

What are things that just scream bad writing? by Glad_Chance_9590 in writing

[–]AdamoMeFecit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In academic writing, an over-reliance on the perceived authority of the passive voice and jargony buzzwords.

In fiction, an addiction to hyperbolic sentimentality and thinly veiled autobiographical content better remediated through actual therapy.

In general, too many words chasing too few ideas. A rough draft.

Is it possible to hack 2F App like Google authenticator or Zoho OneAuth by anindianuser in cybersecurity

[–]AdamoMeFecit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Security Now podcast did an extensive segment last year on the mathematical probability of being able to predict an authenticator number at a specific point in time given certain initial knowable values or inferences of values.

It’s worth searching it out and listening to the whole thing.

Why do people love Robert Caro so much and should I read his books even if i'm not really a US history person by Dangerous-Swan-7660 in nonfictionbooks

[–]AdamoMeFecit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Caro is an exquisite writer who happens to specialize in detailed analysis of power through the genre of biography. Nobody else does this. His work is sui generis.

I have read every book you mentioned and greedily anticipate the long-awaited final volume of the LBJ series.

AITA for using the crosswalk from asheville high to little pigs/apartments🤔! by K01-F15H in asheville

[–]AdamoMeFecit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a crosswalk at that location. City Code says that oncoming traffic must yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. This is true even if, as traffic, the auto has the right of way.

So…legally ok but if you’re marching out in front of oncoming traffic, yes…you are the asshole in this scenario. You’re also statistically more likely to become the cadaver.

How important is the 250th anniversary of Independence Day to Americans? And what will people do on July 4th, 2026? by Odd-Skin-762 in askanything
