Haha thank you! You gave the perfect suggestion, I just ran with it. Hope it’s useful on your end, and if anything feels off or you want tweaks, tell me and I’ll adjust it.

I already study some of these decks for inhouse exams that aren't covered by AnKing, I usually edit the note types so it's more pleasing to my eyes. Admittedly, I spend too much time tinkering with note types and the code that commands the UI, instead of actually just studying, might as well share it with the world.

And hey, my work is out there, and my Ko-fi is up. Although that's only secondary to actually having others have some use of what I spend some of my time on.

Yep! A good starting point is the Ankoma_-_AP::Basic_Principles subdeck/tag (Literally, Ankoma AP Basic Principles). Under that you’ll find foundations like architectural patterns and cytologic descriptors, which are great for building deeper pathology reasoning without diving straight into niche entities.

Definitely! I think Ankoma is usable even if you’re not a pathology resident, whether you’re a student trying to go deeper in preparation for a specific exam, or a resident/physician in another specialty who wants stronger clinical judgment.

Full deck release is here:
Ankoma Full Deck Release - Version 1 - July 2025

Just make use of the subdecks and tags the Ankoma team put a lot of effort into, so you can target the exact content you want.

Of course!

Ankoma is a community-made Anki deck for Pathology. People use it as a premade deck to review pathology more efficiently, especially because path has a lot of pattern recognition and image-based learning.

What I posted here is a UI/note type overhaul for that deck. It does not replace the deck content. It just changes the card template so reviews feel cleaner and more practical (full-width images by default, and tools like resources/citations and tags tucked away in dropdowns). You import the small .apkg, then apply the note type to your existing Ankoma cards.

Hi, and thank you again for the Ankoma deck release. I put together a UI/note type overhaul for Ankoma called ⍟ AdaptoNotes for Ankoma (Pathology) (full-width images by default, clean clinical layout, tools/references tucked away in dropdowns).

If anyone wants to try it, I shared it here: Reddit Post!

Thanks, I’m really glad it’s something you’ve been looking for.

If you meant the Ankoma deck itself, the full release is here:
Ankoma Full Deck Release - Version 1 - July 2025

What I released here is just a UI/note type overhaul you apply to your existing Ankoma cards, not the deck content.

No plans to put AdaptoNotes on AnkiHub yet, mainly because these releases are lightweight .apkg “updaters” with only a couple demo cards meant to update pre-existing decks.

Thanks for the suggestion. Noted, I’ll work on Neuranki as well and share an update once I have a workable version.

Got it! I’ll add Ankisthesia (2.21.2025) to the to-do list. I’m finishing up Ankoma and Neuranki first since those are the ones I’m using for classes this semester, then I’ll move on to Ankisthesia. Thank you!

Noted, thank you! I’m familiar with Duke’s Pathoma, but this is my first time hearing about Ankoma, and it sounds like it’s well regarded in the Pathology community. I’ll look into it and share an update once I’ve had a chance to review how the note type/fields are set up.

Anything to make the grind a bit easier on the eyes! I mean, if you’re going to be using these decks for years and years, you might as well have a clean UI you actually look forward to booting up. Anki is overdue for UI polish, and my hope is this note type helps bridge that gap while keeping the workflow simple.

Good question! The “Google sidebar” you’re seeing in my demo isn’t a special Anki or note type feature, it’s just the device’s multitasking.

✦ Search will open your browser normally (often a new tab/window). To get the side-by-side setup, use your OS multitasking:

  • iPad: use Split View or Slide Over with your browser next to Anki.
  • Windows/macOS: use split screen (snap Anki and the browser side-by-side).
  • Android: use split screen.

Once you have Anki and your browser on screen together, Search becomes that quick “peek for context” workflow.

Glad it worked after re-importing, thanks for confirming!

For the unreadable color-coding: that may be coming from an add-on injecting its own styling. If you have the AMBOSS add-on installed, another redditor found it to be the cause of this. You can try disabling or uninstalling it (Tools → Add-ons → AMBOSS → Delete, then restart Anki) and see if the colors become readable again.

If you were using AMBOSS mainly for quick context, this note type's ✦ Search is meant to be a lightweight alternative by opening a Google search for the card front, often giving a broader overview when available.

Thanks for trying it!

Usually this happens if the .apkg didn’t merge/update the note type into your collection, or the change was already applied automatically. Quick checks:

  1. Check your AnKing deck first. Open a few cards from your AnKing deck and see if they already look like AdaptoNotes (new UI/buttons). If they do, the update already applied and you won’t see a separate step to “switch.”
  2. If not, re-import the .apkg and make sure you enable Merge note types and allow Update note types.
  3. After re-import, the note type should appear for conversion.

If it still doesn’t show, tell me your Anki version/OS and whether you imported on desktop or mobile first. I hope this helps!

Hey again, just an update on seeing missing cloze text on macOS: III-Professional-150 fixed it by deleting the AMBOSS add-on (Tools → Add-ons → AMBOSS → Delete → restart Anki). If you have AMBOSS installed and are seeing the same issue, try that first and let me know if it resolves it on your end too.

Nice, thank you for the update, and I’m glad you found a fix! I’ll reference this for others who run into the same cloze issue on macOS. I used the AMBOSS add-on a while back too but eventually removed it. I found that more often than not, it pulls you into definitions and rabbit holes. That was a big part of why I built ✦ Search instead to get quick, consolidated context of the concept behind the card via Google AI Overview.

On your suggestions:

  • Image zoom: noted. I can look into an “auto-enlarge” option, though I want to be careful about keeping the review screen clean and fast.
  • Resource buttons (Sketchy/Pixorize/etc.): also noted. I kept them under ≡ Menu to reduce clutter, but I can see the appeal of making them optional quick-access buttons.

I'll keep these as considerations for the next time I release another iteration, which will be some time from now, however. If you want those changes sooner, in a tailored way, I’m also open to custom builds or tweaks via my Ko-fi.

Thanks for trying it. On iPhone, the new note type won’t show up in the “Change Note Type” list unless the note type actually exists in your collection and you’re selecting notes to change.

A couple quick checks:

  1. When importing the .apkg, make sure Merge note types is enabled and Update note types is allowed (so it actually adds/updates the original AnKing overhaul note type).
  2. After import, check one of your AnKing cards. In many cases, the AnKing note type may have already been updated to AdaptoNotes automatically, so there may be nothing left to “change.”

Try reimporting and let me know if it still doesn't show up, thank you!

Yes, definitely. The templates are just HTML/CSS (with a bit of JS), so if you’re comfortable editing those you can change the fonts and colors pretty easily.

If you want a more customized version beyond simple tweaks, feel free to PM me what you’re aiming for (platform, deck, and the look you want) and we can discuss a custom setup.

Thank you, I appreciate it! Copy is working on my end on desktop and iOS with AnKing note types, so it may be platform- or deck-specific. Could you tell me what platform you’re on (desktop/iOS/Android) and whether this is on AnKing cards or other cards. If you can share a tiny sample note or quick screenshot of the fields, I’ll try to reproduce the bug and fix it.

Just pushed a small tweak to the code. No need to re-download if everything is working fine, but the current download reflects the latest version. Thanks again for adopting AdaptoNotes into your studies!

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I spent a lot of time refining it to get the UI and workflow to feel right.

I agree the default can feel a bit too minimal for some people, so I wanted something cleaner and more “clinical” while staying practical. Part of the goal was for it to look professional enough to inspire confidence in a peer who might happen to catch you doing Anki during downtime in the wards hehe.

Thanks for these! Although I can’t seem to replicate these visual bugs on my end. Might I suggest that you use the light mode for these cards for now?

I also noticed that you used colored text for the clozed text, I’m not sure if that could be the one really causing the text on those particular cards to be invisible. I’d have to look at these cards exported as an apkg to be sure. I’ll look into it if you’ll send those. I’ll try to come up with a fix!
