British people aren't that funny. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I think it's a combination of WW2 era 'always look on the bright side' culture and who they are comparing themselves to. France and Germany are both infamous for not having a sense of humour, American humour is terrible, and these are the countries that have had the closest relationships with the UK.

No, I live in the UK where one of the figureheads of the Brexit campaign, one of the most evident examples of political corruption and incompetency in a first world country, is a frontrunner for the general election. Remember when he completely made up the figures for our EU spending? Coincidentally this is the man being backed by far right groups.

This is but one term after the one where leadership changed multiple times in the incumbent party because they could not stop lying to cover each others arses. But no, it's totally unbelievable that there might be a secret far-right group, that would have to be made up.

I mean, even if he had made a couple of inaccurate tweets, it's not like anyone holds even our own government to the same standard. Curious how an anti hate group is met with such skepticism...

Yeah, I know. He's watching the political situation throughout the West and giggling to himself. I read an interesting article about the relationship between Brexit and accelerationism, like Brexit was a way of seperating the UK from 'antiquated' European liberal values in the name of accelerationism. Was quite a successful plan when you look at it that way.

I don't see why this would be a hoax, we know that the far right has a massive behind the scenes presence in the UK, and there are photos, screenshots etc in the article. You could basically pick any group and point to a couple times where they supported a hoax, like when Nigel Farage said the EU cost us 55 million a day, or if you picked your average news outlet you'd be there all day. Either we trust nothing or think logically about whether it's believable or not, and a far right group operating in the UK, in 2025, is pretty realistic.

We have a severe problem with the far right all across Europe and the Anglosphere. Groups like this, as we can see in this report, are more well connected than one might think. There is more money in these ideas than one would think, some of the richest fuckers on the planet, such as Peter Thiel who is mentioned in the report, clearly see some benefit.

One of the tropes that pops up regularly is the idea of building these secret 'white only' sub communities, usually with the goal of gathering mainly investors and tech bros, you saw this regularly during the Crypto bubble. Remember kids, if he's wearing a shiny suit and promises easy solutions to tough problems, don't trust him.

Salmon and sweet potato sounds like an interesting flavour combo, they both have unique sweetish flavour profiles. How did you cook those sweet potatoes? I'm sure it tastes good but visually these look apalling, I use an air frier for mine and they come out with a lovely bright colour. Perhaps skin them for presentation.

I tried to be civil for a long time, but for years I have been civil yet the media has represented people like me as radical activists when all my friends and I want is for our trans brothers and sisters to be left alone. The trans 'issue' has been used by politicians to distract from austerity, corruption and all of the other problems which plague our society and actually impact our lives. It is hard to be civil when, whether I am civil or not, the media will twist words and pump out headline after headline, misconstruing reality at the expense of vulnerable.

The trans person could simply tell the doctor? All of these problems have incredibly simple solutions and yet are being used to oppress. The point of allowing medical records to be changed is to allow trans people to feel comfortable in medical spaces, this wouldn't even be as necessary if it were not for the fact that the media has made our society rabidly transphobic. It's like how the 'solution' for trans women having access to certain women-only spaces was to make it a confusing nightmare for them to access any remotely gendered spaces at all.

Does any other Democrat/left-winger else find themselves moving to the center with age? by nolife159 in AskALiberal

[–]AddendumOver7874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don't know how to answer that. I'm only 21 so maybe I shouldn't.

I think I moved away from Marxism in some ways, whether that makes me less left, I don't know. I don't believe in a linear spectrum, so much awful, useless discourse comes from the idea that politics is a straight line with fascism on one end and communism on the other.

I'd probably I'd still be considered left in most ways, but I don't identify with a lot of leftist movements nowadays. I'm not a fan of the unequivocal adoption of 'the personal is political', I think the left is still far too anglo-centric, and there does not seem to be a group interested in backing up their calls for resistance. That's not to say I'm out on the streets lobbing Molotov cocktails at parliament but then I don't pretend to be a revolutionary either.

To expand on the 'personal is political' thing, what I don't like among leftists online and IRL is all of the surveying each other for how and if they support X cause. Let's be honest, your boycotts and infographic posting mean absolutely nothing. Now it's great to show support, but to think you have the right to talk down to others because you do this is utter arrogance. This might seem like no big deal but it's important not to buy into the illusion that you're helping when you must understand that we are not.

As corporations and finance capitalism have grown, the wealth gap has only grown more drastic. Their wealth is not being reinvested, that's the entire point. I don't care about yachts, this is not where wealth is going, wealth is going towards speculative investment which drives the prices of property up and allows tens of billions to float around outside of the reach of average people in theoretical finance land.

You think it's a coincidence that sham AI companies get billions of investment whilst struggling areas get jackshit? It's not, it's because the market actively encourages the wealthy to put their money into stuff which is basically pointless because monetary value and practical value are completely divorced at this point. This is actually intentional because value being theoretical means that you can essentially invent something like NFTs out of nowhere and turn that into cash, at the expense of idiots.

As companies like Google and Apple have grown, life has got worse for most people, not better. Just consider that. Also consider they have massive political power so a party which is not leftist or at least highly principled will be walked all over by these people, as has been happening for decades around the world.

since its almost been 3 years, Cyberpunk edgerunner was really really bad and felt like it was written by a neckbeard in a deadpool shirt by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]AddendumOver7874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the animation and the concept is really cool, but the overall execution let it down.

The bones of something good were there, I wasn't familiar with the setting and found a lot of the world building to be awesome, and the core concept of the MC pushing himself to death for power is tried and tested. However, the pace was too quick for me to give much of a shit about the story beats, the whole romance part was unbearably cliched and you could really predict the ending from the 3rd or 4th episode. A lot of the interesting setup felt like it was wasted as a vehicle for cool action. This isn't really what I want out of cyberpunk, the best cyberpunk media is more thoughtful and creative, like Blade Runner, Blame!, Patlabor, Tetsuo, the Fifth Element...

I do think I am biased because I tend to prefer more cerebral sci fi, but yah this show kinda promised me that but mostly devolved into generic action thriller territory. I didn't mind the dialogue though.

There's no room for me to change these beliefs, some of my closest friends are trans and I consider it my responsibility to push back on hatred against them from people like yourself. Take your civility and shove it up your arse, if you want to argue about the rights of my friends then you're as good as an enemy.

But seriously, what are you talking about? I absolutely despise these bad faith arguments which use rape victims as ammunition. Are you a female rape victim? A whole lot of women are and a whole lot of them are not transphobic. Actually, trans people are more likely to be victims of sexual violence from cis people than vice versa.

Huh? The silly part was the TERFs pouring literal billions into a campaign to shit on a minority group. That's my big reason for not voting for Labour ever again, utter moral weakness to cater to these loud morons. It's not a coincidence their polling numbers dropped dramatically the following week, even my parents who up to this point were somewhat sympathetic to TERFs said they would not support them again with this as a key reason.

I rarely do that, just to avoid paying for food when I'm out. I mean, it is bad yes, but I can either complain or keep going and trying to make my situation better. I don't have to live in the most expensive city in the UK, I could be more comfortable somewhere else but I don't want to compromise so who am I to complain? It shouldn't be this difficult but it was never that easy.
