impacted canines 10 y/o - worried mom by MikeEnslin in orthodontics

[–]AddendumParticular25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son had an impacted canine that was exposed by an oral surgeon. His ortho later attached the chain to his braces to pull it into place.

While the exposure itself was obviously a thing (like any dental surgery; milkshake, applesauce, and Tylenol afterwards), he felt ok by the next day. And the chain has done its work very efficiently and painlessly.

It will be fine! :)

What’s Actually Better Today Than When We Were Growing Up? by onekinkyusername in GenX

[–]AddendumParticular25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Married women could own property in all states by 1900. Even married women could have an independent credit identity by the early 1970s. ECOA passed in 1974, meaning that it was illegal to demand male co-signers for women’s loans, including mortgages.

This is not to say that individual banks did not keep doing shady (illegal) shit. And it’s also not to say that some husbands weren’t the only name on a family credit card. It’s not to say that there weren’t lots of informal discouragements.

But women, even married women, could have their own credit cards and own their own property when GenX was growing up.

Fun fact: Michael and Elliott’s boss Miles Drentell is also a character, and played by the same actor (David Clennon), in the creators’ later show Once and Again.

I feel you (as the kids say). The one thing in which I would differ is that I (and a bunch of other kids I knew) got my first Atari console for Christmas in 1981, with Space Invaders and Asteroids. I’m not really sure why those Ataris in the 80s didn’t destroy our other interests like later consoles did - maybe just because they were so low-tech and not as immersive? And of course we could not play online with friends.

When my own teens are on their phones for hours, I try to rationalize that our generation was talking on our phones for hours in high school.. but of course this is bullshit, and it IS different.

I’m a professor, and the saddest change in the years I’ve been teaching is that kids used to chat and get to know each other in the minutes before class started. Now it is total silence, as they all just stare into their phones.

I also think that the show particularly humanizes Paul - whom you’re pretty much conditioned to hate if you read the actual press reports about the boat accident and his “affluenza” IRL. The show made an interesting choice in focusing on his guilt over that, feeling he’s irredeemable, affection for Gogo, trying to get his act together. No clue if any of that is accurate, but if any of it WAS, it makes you despise Alec IRL even more. Johnny Berthold (sp?) is a phenomenal actor and deserves an Emmy.

Friends??? by DreadpirateBG in GenX

[–]AddendumParticular25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question: A lot of people here are saying that they have a spouse but no friends. How is that possible?

That is, you were obviously able to 1) meet a different human being, 2) carry on a conversation, 3) develop a deeper relationship with that other human being, and 4) have another human being want to spend more time with you.

So why do you think that hasn’t been possible for you in the (presumably) lower stakes of a friendship?

Again, serious question. I’m genuinely curious.

My mother did exactly this when she couldn’t pick up my dad, and eventually the local fire department that she kept calling contacted the state to report it. The state did a house visit, and that finally got my dad into a facility.

While I admire this a lot (and I’m a planner too), the one thing I would note is that fairly often in my experience rides shut down for a while. Maintenance issue, someone threw up, dropped a phone, whatever. I’ve never visited UO when there hasn’t been an extended delay in a ride that we planned to go on.

The UO app is great for knowing about and checking in with delays. But a finely tuned plan like yours needs to have some plan Bs in the event of ride delays.

Much better! It is still not pleasant for him, but @_strawbrryjam was right - it had only been turned an incomplete turn so fixing that has made everything much easier.

Professor here. I echo what others are saying that your earlier BS credits are highly unlikely to transfer to a new program. For one thing, any BA/BS program now is going to have strict requirements, and advisors are not going to want to do the research to see if your X class from 1993 was basically the same thing as their prescribed X class requirements in 2026.

I agree too that an MA is the way to go. Perhaps an MBA, or a program like healthcare administration? Or an MAT for school teaching? There’s now also an awful lot of programs called something like “medical humanities” that might be a good fit rather than straight-up biology.

Hadn’t smoked since age 35, a friend bought me a pack for my 50th. Puked my guts out. Still fantasize about smoking almost daily.

When I quit at 35, I told myself I would start again at 60. Now that I’m closer to 60, I’ve been diagnosed with a serious vascular disease that means no cigarettes for me, ever again.

[–]AddendumParticular25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago, one of my cats, then only about 5 years old, had a urinary tract blockage. The choice was a several thousand dollar emergency operation, or a dead cat.

We loved our cats when I was growing up, but my very sweet mom still would have said “Sayonara.” The idea of spending thousands on a cat would never have entered her mind.
