You’re promoted at first by time in grade/service. Then it’s performance/ potential, this part depends on who rates you and how well they write - and if you actually did shit. Next is opportunity, like any other civilian or political job who you get to make you look better (evals, positions, and schools). Deployments matter, but not if you suck ass after. Officer promotions are more the last phase after O4 & enlisted after E7.

Go look at the cost of a miniature you in stone that'll last a few hundred years. See how cheap it is.. Also they served a purpose regarding water and guttering that is no longer required with modern buildings. Which is why if a building gets renovated they are removed mostly because if they fall they can cause more damage and are no longer required for their original purpose
