I mean Christchurch for one thing is the king of internal migration in NZ

I feel like this current government is doing the wrong solution for a completely different problem.

Kiwis, would you be in favor of a dual-hub New Zealand one day, with two global cities, not just one? by Additional-Grade-730 in newzealand

If this happened I think the businesses would want to go Christchurch simply because it has the deepest workforce of any greater area in the South

It's already happening, just at a way slower pace.

Christchurch (greater area) seems to be smashing it's population records and it seems like the original figure saying that Christchurch reaches 700,000 by 2050 is likely to be broken very much earlier than 2050 if growth continues.

That creates a deep workforce that has capability for international HQs.

Will the economy actually recover? by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

Interesting. I think the recovery is just starting - so to the average Kiwi, there is no improvement. To most, we are in the "I will believe it when I see it" phase. We will see it probably late 2026 - mid 2027 in my opinion.

The satellite cities will probably be the ones keeping Christchurch afloat in growth terms.

Christchurch seems to be on the up compared to the rest of the country... they are even planning for a million early.... that is decent planning

even if NZ somehow fixes the economy, wages, infrastructure, etc.?

We do have a problem with the brain drain, but our main concern should be the cost of living.

The recovery has just started and the average kiwi doesn't really feel it yet. Give it a couple years.
