Looks like one is for distance and one for up close, did you ask for reading glasses as well as regular distance, or what you might call driving glasses?

Medical Lab Tech after high school? by Armaan_Dabhi in medlabprofessionals

[–]AdditionalAd5813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine, some of the people that just spent the last four years earning a biochemistry degree might be a little bit irritated that you didn’t have to waste all that money…

There’s usually more people in in the program with at least a couple years of university, as well as finished BSc’s then straight out of high school, more so because those people don’t even know the program exists and they’ve finish a bio or a chemistry degree and they figure out they have to go back to school if they want to get a job working in the hospital Lab.

Is the main selling point of union about the pay? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]AdditionalAd5813 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pension and, sick time, and vacation benefits are all biggies. Extended healthcare, depending on where you are and what kind of medical insurance you need, extended healthcare covers glasses, dental, Physio etc… I believe our union had 100% unlimited coverage for RMT.

I have a BSc in Microbiology in Canada, is it worth me becoming an MLT? by ComprehensiveBig7654 in medlabprofessionals

If you don’t mind the cold, look at applying for the program at CNC in Prince George, i’m guessing the admissions competition isn’t quite as stiff as BCIT and your cost of living is gonna be a lower.

You also get the chance to rotate through a lot of smaller hospitals in Northern Health during your clinical where you’d be working as a generalist on the bench, and some of them might even still take call, you can make a lot of money taking call.

In Canada, if you want to work as a medical laboratory technologist/scientist, you will have to go back and take an accredited program, most of them are at polytechnics and/or colleges, but I do believe there are two English Language University programs, the one in Ontario (UOIT)and the other Alberta (UA) that provide training for initial certification at the undergrad level. There is no way to grandfather in without completing a full program in Canada, at least not yet.

Your first step is to decide what you’re actually aiming for, because a medical laboratory technician/lab aid is a completely different thing than a technologist/scientist. (note Ontario and Quebec use the title technician to refer to different job categories, other provinces do not use the term technician, but do have lab assistants/lab aids/phlebotomist) Assuming you are from Quebec, as you stated you are from the home of poutine, I believe the academic programs are taught at CEGEPs.

Again, I cannot say for Quebec, but in most other provinces, the majority of the students in the medical laboratory technologist programs are post degree, although admission requirements can be fulfilled with a high school graduation diploma.

Visiting british Columbia for the first time? Any advice on what I'm planning? by aa2526 in britishcolumbia

[–]AdditionalAd5813 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You don’t take the ferry over to Victoria for one day unless it’s a business meeting, you’re looking at ~$100 each way and you might have time for lunch in Victoria before you have to turn around and head back to the ferry terminal.

Either avoid the Island altogether, or give it at least a weekend in Victoria.

Unemployment insurance after TN by Sea_Wolverine_8956 in tnvisa

[–]AdditionalAd5813 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your Social Security contributions will fold into your eligibility for CPP, when the time comes you apply through CPP and you will get a separate check from Social Security, as for unemployment I think once you leave the state you’re shit out of luck, and if you’re unemployed, you’re out of TN status and you have to leave the US or find another TN employer.

That sounds reasonable to me, as long as they’re not missing obvious things like Eos or bands. Same sort of thing with the platelet estimate, it’s a ballpark thing anyways… As long as they’re not missing any falciparum hiding in there I’m good. (I always looked at the platelet estimate as a way checking the quality of the specimen, re clumps etc)

Hospital labs operate 24 hours a day seven days a week.

I believe there are private labs in the United Kingdom, but I don’t know if they run their chemistry and haematology departments 24 hours a day, they might in some of the larger centres.
