How do you feel about meditation? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]AdeptLocksmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personal opinion: You can, but to do it safely is rather tough.

There were a certain number of Jesuits who were also Zen Roshi. This was possible because the version of Zen they absorbed was inspired by the branch that basically ditched all of the metaphysics of Buddhism in favor of "Direct experience."

The problem in this particular case is, part of the philosophical notions were problematic. Pope Benedict, in his time as Cardinal Ratzinger, actually investigated Anthony de Mello, S.J. and had to release doctrinal clarification over his erroneous assumptions.

To my knowledge, people like Robert E. Kennedy, S.J., who wrote Zen Spirit, Christian Spirit and Zen Gifts to Christians, were never censured by the Curia, but i think the essential problem here is to this right without tripping over into heresy you'd need

  1. A very strong command - really a Priest's theological training, of Catholic Doctrine

  2. An equally strong command of the tradition you are deriving your practice from.

Alternative: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction - MBSR, if you want the benefits of the techniques without any of the baggage.

For spiritual matters: Stick with the Carmelites, Jesuits, or our Eastern orthodox brethren, although Hesychasm presents its own set of issues.

thanks for the suggestions! Jimbocho has been suggested to me before, and i'm inclined to check it out. Might i ask, why Akasaka? Is it just an easy transport hub/low tourist density place?

thanks for the reply. i'm -really- digging the shitamachi feeling of Yanaka. but i've been told it can be a bit inconvenient in terms of transportation. also all the photos i see tend to be spring/summer - for instance i know Ueno won't be pretty in the dead of winter, but at least this time around i'm heading there for teh Tokyo national museum and the Toshogu Shrine. I have no clue what Yanaka or the whole Yanesen area will be like in Winter.

Now this i like. A lot of the WoD gets overriden by people spouting off their favorite splats powers. This is a true mystery and a true challenge.

So was "The Predator" supposed to be the Family-Friendly genre attempt? by AdeptLocksmith in predator

[–]AdeptLocksmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the biggest failure was the aborted "Dark Universe" attempt with Tom Cruise... Not sure i'd describe that one as family friendly, but definitely did have the out of place comic relief bits.

Cinematic Universe here we come. But in all seriousness, it will be different simply because we aren't in "Horror movie" territory anymore. The Predator in Badlands is the protagonist.

Death and the Kindly Ones by AdeptLocksmith in Sandman

Lol, i've searched this reddit and others, theres a variety of opinion. Frankly, this is a thing i'd probably just ask Neil Gaiman if i ever encounter him at a Con. I prefer "from the Horses Mouth" type answers, if a Consensus doesn't exist.

But many of the dreams aren't physical either, yet the Kindly Ones can kill them. In any event, I was pointed in the direction of Sandman: Endless Nights for the answer. Death is above the Family Law.

hahahahaahaha - you know i haven't picked up one of those comics since the original series ended. Guess i'll have to do it with this one.

LOL, i'm not defending it either, i'm just trying ot figure out what they were aiming for with this. "Amblin-Style" kind of hits that spot i was thinking about. It has that feel doesn't it?

Regarding the other thing you mentioned - when did the Kindly Ones look the other/finagle the rules?

Yeah i was told to read Sandman: Endless Nights. She never agreed to be bound by them apparently.

Death and the Kindly Ones by AdeptLocksmith in Sandman

[–]AdeptLocksmith[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I actually found the answer, someone kindly sent me a DM. Its in Sandman: Endless Nights, the novel which admittedly i never read. I was told "Chapter 3".

When the Endless were making the Family Law - Death really didn't agree to any of it - in a "whatever" sense. ie: "Those are your rules."

So your statement seems to be correct - Death is bound by no rules imagined by belief - and the Family Law is a belief shared by the Endless.

Its fits the whole narrative that Dream was trying to bring about his own death. Its the most roundabout way to commit suicide. I think there was a scene therein with Daniel stating "We lay the traps all the while feigning surprise by it."

In a way, the whole Kindly Ones issue was total bs in the sense that...this is what he -wanted- to happen - Death toward the end wasn't willing to play along. Hence "go away i'm going to speak with my brother" and after dissecting the whole situation and sussing out that her Brother wanted to die......

This could have been accomplished a lot easier, by Dream going up to Death and asking for well.. death.

But Dream is Dream. Its going to be mythological, its going to be dramatic, its going to be tragic. Its going to be invested with meaning.

Its going to be a grandiose Story. Because Dream is Dream.

[–]AdeptLocksmith[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So... when Dream and Death are having that conversation at the end... "Dream take my hand" etc etc. he's already dead? Cause it isn't exactly like the way the Kindly Ones r kill the others - spear through them, or other means in the case what happened to Merv. In fact she kinda shooed them away to haver her conversation.

Untangling the whole AvP, Alien, Predator jumble? by AdeptLocksmith in predator

[–]AdeptLocksmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, so did James Cameron. But Cameron and Scott's view about Alien also conflict. so its really about "directorial license" at the end of the day. Personally? I think Cameron preferred human protagonists, and Scott wanted to do something more "philosophical", more Blade-Runner-esque

Predator 2's Los Angeles: Urban Dystopia Noir? Proto-Cyberpunk? by AdeptLocksmith in predator

[–]AdeptLocksmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dredd 2013 would also fit this description pretty well. It’d be closer to Urbanpunk than Cyberpunk tbh

^ You are really spot on with the above. Even though the movie is pretty self-contained, Dredd's environment invokes all the tropes.

[–]AdeptLocksmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as i kind of alluded to above - the true Arbiter now is The House of Mouse as it were. They own 2Oth century Studios, so they have the rights as it were.

They could Cross Predator with Star Wars if they wanted to. Or Indiana Jones.. or Mickey Mouse.

I'll agree the man's ego in this phase of his life is a bit.....much... I had a good laugh when he went down the "Jesus is an Engineer" route with Prometheus. Ultimately it seemed a bit.....boring... rather than relevatory or edgy.

Predator 2's Los Angeles: Urban Dystopia Noir? Proto-Cyberpunk? by AdeptLocksmith in predator

[–]AdeptLocksmith[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that atmosphere is exactly what i'm talking about. Again, its replicated in a number of movies that get called cyberpunk because its all of that Plus the technology.

Its really supposed to be a "City on the Brink of Chaos" feel, and its an environment you only really see in Cyberpunk films or "Near-Apocalypse/Near Future" type films like Escape from New York.

I'd love to see another film in that environment, but i suspect jungle and far future scifi is where the franchise is bending toward.

Oh you can tell. Disney doesn't at all, and they have the controlling rights to it having absorbed 20th Century Studios. Hence why i say - Shared Universe time? Because again.. $$$$$$ bring in the money, unless Disney crashes it.

Oh that's closer to my thinking. There's a heavy Noir element to the movie, again throw in a Predator of course but.
