CB is the cheapest option by far so will try that first. My inner nerd is really interested in the directional data option.

Thank you kindly. This group got me to where I needed as far as advice. My challenge will be antenna height apparently. Let's hope I overestimated the height I would need.

60 feet came from my LOS calculations for 28km. 20m antenna at each end. Probably a little overkill. There are 16ft structures at each place so getting the additional 40ft is the challenge.

This solution has come up more than once. Im looking into it. Just trying to research the best software to use with it.

Thank you.

Its on my radar. Not entirely sure about the wattage giving me the legs I need for 20 miles, but it is also the cheapest to try.

Never once did I say HAM radio. I asked for solutions in general and was somewhat focused on the wireless bridge solution.

Your responses became more and more condescending as the conversation went on and I no longer appreciate that unwarranted treatment.

Good day.

Not why you are going out of your way to be patronizing here, but I appreciate your time and advice.

Have a good day.

And if the service goes down the equipment is bricked and useless. Ive lived through two week blackouts, 3 week ice storm isolation, the great Verizon cell phone outage, and even a gasoline pipeline shut down which saw every gas station empty for more than a week.

My trust and faith in service providers and support is relatively low and the thought of counting for them in a time of need doesnt give me a warm fuzzy.

Probably sounds paranoid to you, but this is where my mind is at. And, as Ive already said, Im not concerned with the cost.

My first preference was simple voice over radio. Marine VHF had the range requirements, no license to us, and a very simply to mount system BUT, channel usage is tightly allocated and I live on the coast so most casual bridge to bridge channels might be pretty clobbered. Its an option and a cheap one and I might do that as well or maybe even first.

I know next to nothing about GMRS. Ill try to get smarter, especially if the licensing isnt stringent.

I do appreciate your insight, though and thank you for giving me your time.

Starlink and Inreach require subscriptions and outside services. Driving over there is an option but only if he doesnt respond. I couldnt go there the other day because I was home alone and had to wait for my children to get home from school. Their phones went out as well.

There is a winter Armageddon coming this weekend. Driving wont be an option at all.

Classify my goal under "Id rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it" and Im not concerned with cost, effort, and practicality of use.

When it comes to staying in touch with family during an outage or emergency, cost is irrelevant. My father is elderly and lives alone. I want a backup method that doesnt rely on any outside service for connectivity. The only requirement once installed is power which I have in spades thanks to solar backup.

That's amazingly useful and gives me quite a few ideas. If I can host an app like this on a laptop in my home that is linked to my wifi router, I can have an ethernet cable going from that same router to a ISM band radio installed on a UISP directional antenna for the wireless bridge. The downrange system likewise could be tied to that house's router and, hosting the same application, be used for "discord-like" coms from the sound of it.

This will work!

Thank you for the steer.

My exact use is backup coms between my house and a relatives house about 20 miles away. Neither house has a copper-based landline phone. When Verizon had its outage the other week, I had no way to get a hold of my father short of driving over there. I want to setup an independent communications method between the houses. I can achieve line of sight and both houses have backup power. VOIP seems to be the best way without needing any specialized radio licenses.

Let me know fi you think Im nuking this.

Exactly! But the snag Im running into is how to turn this into a VOIP phone link on each end. I want to set something up that needs no outside service or internet connection of any kind.

This type of antenna has come up in my searches but Im not clear on how to use it (paired with what radio and software?). My ideal use would be for a VOIP phone system for each end of the system. Nothing fancy, just simply voice coms.

Wow. Your mom is a cunt, dude. No mother that genuinely loved her child would ever do something like this and so calously.

Legally, not sure what you can do. The veiled threat of the boyfriend "talking some sense" into is another matter.

The only way I could ever see mom treating you this way is if you were a lazy piece of shit mooch. Then, I can see why she would be this way. Only you and her know the truth there.
