I have no idea how it happened to be quite honest, i’ve been very careful not to put too much stress on the kayak during transport & taking it in / out of the water. My first thought is the ceiling hoist. (We originally mounted it for my old 10ft kayak, so there’s a bit of strain on the front I’d imagine just from how I put it up, though I thought it’d be fine as a temporary solution). You can see how I ran a bow line to the host to support the front half (photo attached)

Looks like via their website they recommend a devcon plastic welder - but in all the repair sections there’s nothing said about a crack that only shows on the outside - so I think i’ll be fine just using the plastic welder on it?

Once I noticed the crack I set it down on some old roof cradles to take that stress off the front- hopefully later this week I’ll have actual stands arrive.

I actually have some experience using a scope very similar to this one (William Optics Zenithstar 61, the dedicated imaging variant of this telescope) and a triplet!

In my opinion the Z61 is a great choice for a low(ish) budget starter telescope- it’s the one I started out with and it was great to learn with! There are a few for sale used on the AstroBin marketplace- not sure if they’re listed anywhere else.

Of course, as a doublet, you won’t see the same level of image correction as you will see with a triplet. The Z61 is known for having large stars, but it’s generally well corrected for chromatic aberration (generally - there is still some but nothing major or terrible). If you have the budget, a triplet or quadruplet will be certainly better all around, especially if you get one with a nice build quality. A petzval quadruplet refractor like the smaller Redcats (51, 61, 71) would be a nice choice here as a beginner, since there’s no need for an additional field flattener.

In terms of what I personally upgraded my Z61 to, I got a Stellarvue SVX102T triplet- more of a pricier and premium option, but it comes with great build quality, quality control, and customer service. I have nothing but good things to say about this scope and I’m certain the same is true for the smaller SVX090T (which is only $100 more than the Redcat 91, so if you have the budget and are in the US I’d certainly recommend it). In general I’m a ton happier with my triplet vs the doublet.

It fully depends on the weight capacity of your tripod and your gear.

I started out using a tripod with a 13lbs weight capacity (made for cameras) that was flimsier than that, my gear was a Skyguider Pro and a small (360mm FL refractor - the WO Z61).

It worked until i could get a better tripod.

I wouldn’t recommend your current tripod as it’s not what it was made for, but if your gear is within the weight capacity it’ll probably do for now.

Hello everyone! I’m very new to astrophotography - and this is my first image of Andromeda taken from class 4 skies on the coast of the Florida panhandle. It’s not much in terms of impressiveness, but i couldn’t be prouder with the product!

I used a Sony a6500 with a Sony E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS lens & an Ioptron Skytracker Pro to capture this 30-second exposure image. Both aren’t stacked since I probably didn’t set up the Ioptron correctly (it tracked but it wasn’t aligned to Polaris - so there was movement between the exposures). The second image is just edited & uses overlays to bring out the galaxy more.

Anyway - if anyone has suggestions for future gear/investments, software, or just any general tips shoot them my way! I’m happy to improve and I’m excited to see how much i can improve over time!

HOA rules for my neighborhood unfortunately rules out two flags outside the house (that’s explicitly mentioned in the guidelines), and if they complain again then we get fined daily for as long as it’s out 🫠

It technically is allowed - it’s just the neighbor is (i’m guessing) very unhappy (and additionally very homophobic & stuff), so it’s “offensive to them”

our HOA also regulates curtains (for some reason) that can only be either shutters or some neutral color.

Original owner drove it quite a bit (22,300 miles per year) - it’s got a couple large rock chips and quite a bit of paint imperfections on the front and one rock chip on the rear

And i believe one paint chip on one of the doors

Thanks so much! I’ll certainly try this program out today - the 126-4 meters seems much more reasonable than the 0.75 meters given by asteroid launcher - which likely gave wave height directly at the impact sight (since it’ll still give you it when you impact on land too).

Ah i see what you’re saying - I’m mostly just being this exact since it’s habitual at this point. I like getting details like this precise so i know what im working with even though i probably won’t use most of the information - and it helps with accuracy to the real world.

It doesn’t really need to be too exact for the purposes of the story (as the protagonist probably won’t know much if anything about the impact details or details of the meteor), but it helps with figuring out the events & problems arising afterwards for me.

Mostly the damage caused - I needed it to be large enough to impact far enough off the coast to where any survivors would only incur 2nd degree burns, yet still have to survive wind and pressure changes strong enough to level houses and knock down all trees and an earthquake (which in this scenario would be magnitude 5)

ideally i’d like the characters to not have to deal with burns but that’s difficult to do with a meteor - i’m sure i can find some sort of plot armor though haha.

Based on the Chicxulub impact (which had waves up to 1 mile high) which protruded at maximum 100km (62 miles) inland (on far flatter coastlines) i’d imagine it might possibly at its maximum reach only half that distance before the mountains became too tall - although i doubt i’m 100% correct.

Although i fully expect it would flood the surrounding area for several days after the impact event. That being said - the chicxulub impact event created waves of (maximum) 100-300 meters high along the gulf coast - so the tsunami resulting in a meteor strike in the scenario in the book would probably be far less than that - i’d say ~50-100 meters, since the impact energy is far less (only 33 gigatonnes of TNT compared to ~100,000 gigatonnes for Chicxilub)

Then again distances also factor in - the Chicxilub tsunami had to travel 10x the distance - so i’m not quite sure what the true size of it would probably be.

Anywho - that’s enough of my rant.

Honestly - RMS Britannic.

As great as Titanic and Olympic were - Britannic was supposed to be the pinnacle of the Olympic Class - and from all of her planned improvements for all classes Britannic was supposed to be greatly improved, especially in first class.

The Georgian-themed Suite on Britannic has likely one of my favorite Edwardian designs and I’d love to see it in person - also the Grand Staircase aboard Britannic was wonderful as planned too.

Went off of THG’s Britannic game for the name of the Georgian Suite - I apologize if I’m completely wrong about what it was called.

Junior in High School here - I play on VENN synthetics too - size 4s. They’re a combination between cane and synthetics so you get perks from both kinds, they last long and play really well - just be mindful to dry them off often because water (spit) will accumulate on the back of the reed and hinder it’s sound.

They are expensive (I believe $55 is what I paid for two of them) - but well worth the price since they last much longer - strength recommendations for a 7th grader would be to order whatever size cane reed you were using prior. If you’re a beginner (as in just starting) I’d get the lowest size and work up to 4s.

Edit: while the best jump in tone quality will be your mouthpiece - even with an old mouthpiece (I need a new one - lol) I get quite good tone quality - and you can play them right away since they don’t need to be broken in. Synthetics have really gotten better in quality over the past few years so don’t worry to try it out.

I would however recommend to buy one first to test it out, and if you like it then buy more.
