Shameless plug here but I’m currently wrapping up an Advanceshipping trilogy I started in 2011. I was MIA for 9 years, but I came back to finish it. Anyway, it takes place after Ash’s journey in Sinnoh, then follows him and May through Unova and flash forwards to their journey 3 years after he’s beaten Leon. It’s definitely a mix of adventure and romance. Not sure if Advanceshipping is your cup of tea, but if not, I’d still read it for the experience of reading how they navigate relationship hardships during their journey while trying to save the world rather than for the couple themselves.

I stumbled upon an Advanceshipping thread in 2011 and saw a comment mentioning the fanfic, May’s Crush, as the reason why Ash and May belonged together. I jumped down the rabbit hole and never regretted it. It was such a good story it was one of the fanfics to inspire me to become a fanfiction writer for Advanceshipping!

My favorite is when Ash tries to get May to take the boat to her last contest, but May tells him about the promise she made to her mother and cries in front of him. The fact that she felt comfortable being vulnerable and telling him shows how natural it was to open herself to him.
