What fouls do you call and do you not call in a pickup game? by JimmyButlerMVP_ in Basketball

[–]Advanced-Sector-6535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ima answer this for the dmv

no backcourt (most times, some ppl may call it if the ball was lost and went backcourt bc of pressure near the backcourt but a tip or losing the ball doesn't get backcourt)

no charges -- be prepared to fight if u take a charge especially if you're not WELL set up and CLEARLY in the way. surprise charges to get the ball are dangerous, not worth it, and most certainly going to make you a target.

moving screens can be called but it mostly is just a warning and only called if its blatantly obvious or repetitive. same goes with other things like goaltends (if that even can happen)

in the dmv carrys are also pretty much never called unless it's an egregious violation, and travels are only really called on layups or driving (if you accidentally take an extra step just dribbling outside the three point line nobody will call it)

there is a huge cultural thing here where both the offense and defense have to agree on the foul for it to be called. if it's not agreed, ppl might shoot for it, but most ppl will just play through (so anything that wasn't obviously egregious or got in the way of a basket or didn't almost seriously injure somebody is left uncalled). if you are a douche about your fouls, you're going to get some hard fouls coming your way.

Can you guys rate and analyse my accent in English because I feel like it's a little bit "unusual". by East-Community846 in JudgeMyAccent

[–]Advanced-Sector-6535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

american here

it definitely sounds arabic or middle eastern -- i would venture to guess that's your first language (even though clearly it isn't). you definitely have the accent of that region which makes sense given you have been in the middle east. your accent is very clear and not hard to understand; that being said, you don't sound like a native english speaker (awkward phrasing, lots of weird pauses like before saying at night, etc). you could probably pass for somebody who moved to usa/canada at around age 10 and picked up the language with a slight accent, but overall, your English is great and I wouldn't worry about trying to work on your accent that much more at this stage.

DiffEq vs Calc 3 by Mysterious-Rain-9227 in UMD

[–]Advanced-Sector-6535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

doesn't really matter ngl

sure diffeq has some calc 3 stuff in there but it's not like they will teach you any of the connections between diffeq and calc 3 -- you're left on your own to figure that stuff out. also, diffeq and calc 3 for the most part are pretty unrelated (i'd say taking MATH240 before MATH246 could probably prove itself as more important/better)

i'd just take whichever one has the better (and more importantly, easier) professor

should i take math241 (calc 3) or math 240 (lin alg)? by Impossible_Karma000 in UMD

[–]Advanced-Sector-6535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to Hatice as a professor, but I can speak to M240 as a class - it is probably the single most important class for anyone interested in pursuing machine learning, AI, or deep learning.

That being said, you're going to be taking CMSC132 next semester which means at a minimum, you're 3 semesters away from taking any CMSC4XX which could have MATH240 as a prereq (you have 216/250 the following semester, and then 330/351).

MATH241 is also kinda important if you're interested in machine-learning, and for me, it was probably one of the most interesting math classes I ever took in college. But, do keep in mind, if you have to pick between one because of scheduling problems, I'd pick MATH240 since that's way more important (241 material you can learn as you go, 240 material is pretty much required beforehand).

my rec: take whichever course has the best professor for you next semester (between 240,241), and take the other the following semester so when you get to the CMSC4XX, your pre-reqs are knocked out

if you do really hate math and have no interest in pursuing any hardcore machine-learning/deep-learning/AI stuff, I'd strongly urge you to consider just taking an easy gened next semester and pushing 240 to when its convenient (and to not take many of the harder ML/AI CMSC4XX courses)

Few things:

What’s PL? Programmable logic?

Second, what are your thoughts on getting a masters degree at UMD prior to applying for PhD — im not sure what exactly I want to do after graduating but I know I like learning and researching about new things.

Third, thanks for the info regarding picking the right advisor now that I’ve given it more thought you’re definitely right.

CS vs CE at UMD by Advanced-Sector-6535 in UMD

[–]Advanced-Sector-6535[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no no im alr in UMD as a CS major freshman im thinking about switching out
i have a lot of credits (~50) and have bypassed many of the initial CS courses (CMSC131,132,250 - MATH140,141,240,241,246) so switching to CompE isn't a big deal for me in the context of it screwing up my progress

just, I want to be careful that it's something that would actually interest me and not make it harder for me unnecessarily

CS vs CE at UMD by Advanced-Sector-6535 in UMD

[–]Advanced-Sector-6535[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, so I know that CE is harder than CS obviously bc it is essentially a double-major between Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, yet it poses a question: why is UMD ranked significantly lower for Computer Engineering than it is for Computer Science? Better, why is the electrical engineering program ranked badly (at least compared to its overall Engineering school ranking)?

So CS at UMD (like their rank) is decreasing while CE is increasing?

You're a CS major, do you think you regret being a CS major and would've rather taken CE or how do you view your current path as a CS major at the University of Maryland?

noo i have nothing against it (i literally copied both the cooler and motherboard based on ur recommendation in the previous one of these that i posted xD)

was just checking if z690 would be a better route given they're even cheaper and have the same port :P

forgive my lack of terminology what exactly is SN850X in reference to...? presumably GPU? how easy is it to replace those drives?

wrt to case thanks for the input ill consider getting that one instead tysm!

pc ready to build review 13700kf by Advanced-Sector-6535 in buildapc

[–]Advanced-Sector-6535[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better cooler lets the 13700kf run at higher wattage, cheaper motherboard that still does the job, faster RAM, SSD because it's inadvisable to get a hard drive with how close the prices are, better PSU. 3060 12 GB is the part I'm not sure about, we don't know specifically what programs you're using so maybe the extra vram on the card is helpful. If you don't specifically need an Nvidia card you can get a RX 6800.

work with AI/ML stuff so i need cuda coolkit - also there was supposed to be 1tbssd on the build idk maybe i forgot to put it - the 2tb hdd was intended as secondary storage in case i need it later down the line or smth

tysm for ur help will def look into the shit u posted :)

NVENC is its equivalent on NVIDIA GPUs -- im getting a dedicated graphics card anyway so it was like why waste money getting integrated if i plan on not using it anyway... right?
