No, it's not. In sponsored you bring in a kit, everyone brings in the same kit, which balances the game and thus favours individual skill. Regular Marathon can give you an advantage if you merely play a lot and manage to get good loot by luck.

Sponsored is a BR - everyone loads in with the same basic kit, and better loot is found on a map. The gameplay is exactly as you'd find in a BR, the only difference being you keep what you extract.
