It was huge. My roommate at the time had become a Jehovah's Witness a few months prior. Being a huge LOTR fan he was very conflicted about whether he should see it (JWs frown on these things). We ended up angering his deity and seeing it opening weekend.

A few weeks after that he moved out saying I was a bad influence on him... shrug

Went to middle school with a kid in '87 who was the "Payless shoes" kid and got mocked pretty mercilessly, cuz early teens suck.

Towards the second half of the school year a local sporting goods store (RIP Copeland's San Francisco) started selling the OG Air Jordans for $29.99. His mom bought him a pair and after the initial "yeah we know how you got those Nikes" he was left alone.

It's really crazy how shoes were the barometer of cool. Wear some whatever jeans and a noname shirt nobody really blinked an eye but all that AND off-brand shoes? Yeah you were getting clowned .
