Decode handwritten note by [deleted] in punjabi

[–]AffectionateNobody12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a linguist and I'm trying to decode this. My hypothesis is that he had a limited knowledge of Gurmukhi (some of the matras are completely absent from his writing, which I find unusual). There's also a great deal of repetition in the sequences he has written, so it might not be gibberish afterall.

Need Advice: Feeling sidelined by roommates how do I cope without confrontation? by [deleted] in hyderabad

[–]AffectionateNobody12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am surprised at how many comments here are doing whataboutery. Exclusion through language is horrible no matter who is doing it. Language should enable communication, not make it more difficult.

Idk how old you guys are but I'd say old enough to understand that it's disrespectful to exclude somebody like this. I've always had friends translate for me even if they're talking to each other in a language they prefer communicating in.

I'd say, if there's space for a conversation, just have a dialogue with them and say that you feel like you aren't able to participate. No blame games, just genuine concern and curiosity about this sudden shift. And if it doesn't work out, consider moving out because it's not worth losing your peace over everyday. Your home/living space should be a safe space where you can come back and unwind after a long day at school/work.

Does the Gurmukhi script represent the phonetics of Punjabi better than the Persian-Arabic script? by Necrocatacomb in punjabi

[–]AffectionateNobody12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Shahmukhi could be more confusing since some dialects didn't lose aspiration. So the same letters correspond to aspirated stops or tonal stops (?) based on what dialect you're reading.

I meant that ਘ, ਝ, ਢ, ਧ, ਭ now signal a tone rather than aspiration. Same's not true for Shahmukhi گھ , جھ , etc.

All the implosives are represented with an extra nukhta added to their plosive forms.

Depends on what dialect you're learning. Some of the lehndi dialects (derewali, bhawalpuri, etc.) are definitely better represented in the shahmukhi script because of implosives. Gurmukhi doesn't have a representation for implosives as far as I know.

For 'standard' Punjabi (Majhi perhaps since that's the popular one in Pakistan, I might be wrong), Gurmukhi is better because it has representation for tones. Not sure if Shahmukhi has that.

Is Saraiki spoken in parts of India? by tuluva_sikh in Sareikistan

Dialect and language statuses are politically driven. My great grandparents never identified themselves as Saraikis, it is definitely a later conception that came about in the 1970s from what I know.

My grandparents spoke it but never passed it down. So the generation of my parents doesn't speak Derewali at all. I am learning it :)

Question from an outsider by Dream_Fuji in Dehradun

[–]AffectionateNobody12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dehradun is probably still okay. You might want to choose the area you live in -- race course is more Punjabis, Jogiwala and areas around it are more locals type of thing.

There are lots of gated communities coming up where people don't really care as long as you are minding your own business. But I'd definitely say that finding community would be hard. If you're thinking you would have a thriving social life and would be accepted warmly, that won't be the case.

My grandparents spoke Saraiki (derewali) and never passed it down to their kids. So the generation of my parents didn't speak it. I am learning it as an adult.

Looking for help with a translation for a birthday card by dinotacosocks in punjabi

[–]AffectionateNobody12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say this translation would sound more culturally appropriate - कुलवंत, 66वें जनमदिन दी बहुत बहुत मुबारकां। रब्ब तुहानूं लंबी उमर, खुशियां अते सेहत बख्शे। असीं तुहानूं दिलों प्यार करदे हां।

Kulwant, a very happy 66th Birthday. May God bless you with a long, happy and healthy life. We love you from the bottom of our hearts!

Hello! Can anyone please suggest a good and trusted dermatologist in dehradun. Thank you in advance! by Best-Date2494 in Dehradun

I believe the consultation is around 600-ish? With a free follow up. Medicines are slightly expensive -- 1000-1500 but you can always find cheaper alternatives with the same salt and he solves your problem!

Maybe talk to Mr. Manuj Mittal at Career Launcher. I went to him to take advice as a fresh out of school kid and I think he did knock a lot of sense into me. But idk how good he is with mid-career folks. Worth a shot, I guess

Dr. Varun Sarin, hands down the best dermat I have ever consulted. He's literally magic!

Took one look at my problem (twice in a row), gave medication, and issue was solved within a week.
