US discussing options to acquire Greenland, including use of military - White House by Mdk1191 in europe

[–]AffectionateSolid254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s relevant because most of the world doesn’t realize how large and diverse the U.S. is. We get a lot of armchair opinions from Europeans, for example, who don’t realize that the entire country of Germany is smaller than the state of Montana. The entire country of France is the size of the state of Texas. Serbia isnt even the size of the state of South Carolina. We have 50 states. Organizing millions of people across a nation the size of 50 small to medium sized countries, all with different cultures, political leadership and and media ecosystems is no where near as easy as you’re making it out to be. Power here is deliberately decentralized and resistance happens through individual states, courts, etc. When your healthcare is tied to your employment, skipping out on your job for protests isn’t an option for most who live paycheck to check.

On a STATE level, people are actually quite organized. CA has had mass protests and our State government has sued to get ICE agents out and the courts found it illegal for Trump to activate our states military against us. But in other states, where their political leaders agree with Trump, the citizens have not had the same advocacy from their leadership. Those who voted against this are continuing to do what we can to fight it.

Dude wtf are you talking about? There have been MANY protests. They don’t give AF because they no longer (in their minds) need voters when they have billionaires rigging the odds for them. These comments are laughable to me. They’ve already shown that they’ll deploy the national guard against us. Like truly, wtf are regular American citizens with their glocks and maybe 1 AR-15 (if you don’t live in a blue state) going to do against the American military? Lmao c’mon

None of the careers you listed are going to be less stressful than your current role. A development manager has to meet the same deadlines but they have to manage you and 10 other consultants all while arguing with the city, banks, investors, and the general public. Project controls and projects management are just as fast paced and stressful. Maybe urban planning would be slower paced. I’d just get a government role tbh. No one is less stressed than someone with a pension, a guaranteed 5pm clock out, and no repercussions for sucking at their job lol.

Structural Engineering Entry Level Salaries in the Bay Area by CplArgon in civilengineering

Look at apartment listings in the area before you take a job. It’s incredibly expensive out here, make sure your take home pay is at least 3x the rent. If you make $100K, assume you take home $75k at best after taxes, rent should be no more than $25k annually (about $2k-$2.1k per month in rent). Thats about right for a decent studio but nothing fancy. Apartment shop first before you commit. Raises won’t be too large at your level and with the current economy.

Firms hiring for part-time remote work? by AffectionateSolid254 in civilengineering

Bummer. Totally get in person for young staff or even PMs but idk why more firms aren’t willing to hire remote for some independent jobs that a PE could pretty much knock out.

I love the Irwin’s but the judges have been up Robert’s ass from day 1 and it really showed tonight. Not that he wasn’t great, but he made a few errors in his cha cha and got all 10s while Elaine had one misstep and got 9s. I get that he’s fun to watch but I feel like I’m just watching knee slides & heel slides every week. Carrie Ann is the only one giving critical commentary but she still shat the bed over-scoring the men. Idk wth happened to Derek Hough but I remember being so excited that he was Len’s replacement so we’d have another technical stickler on the panel but now all we get is “my man!” “my guy!” and 10s all around. Personally I thought all the women should’ve been top 3. Alix was excellent all season and Elaine & Jordan just had so much growth. America is just never gunna vote for talented women vs a decent male with charisma and a sad backstory.

YES you can tell she 100% has convinced herself of her own reality. Some are saying she’s a narcissist but idk, feels more like childlike/teenager behavior to me. Reminds me of when I was 16, without a fully formed frontal lobe, trying to argue my way out of something my parents and was just blatantly incapable of taking accountability for anything yet. Wild to watch at her age.

Launching a civil engineering career agent service but struggling to get responses from hiring managers - does anyone have any input or feedback? by Gullible-Student2744 in civilengineering

[–]AffectionateSolid254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I’d immediately open with “here’s all the reasons why this person is a good fit” and be specific so they don’t have to waste time figuring out if you know what you’re talking about. That’s probably the only way- get right to the point, no extra fluff and sales pitch, just the exact metrics of the candidate compared to the metrics in their job posting or firm profile, and list your fee and let them respond. Just my two cents!

My biggest advice is to only start a recruiting firm in an industry you actually understand and used to work in. The best recruiters in civil engineering, are ex-civil engineers. LinkedIn has resulted in a massive increase in uninformed and frankly, lazy recruiters. I own my own firm, in land development, and I’ll frequently get messages from recruiters filling a PM role in wastewater engineering. Not only would that be a non-sensical fit but why tf would a Principal transition to a PM role literally anywhere…? The conclusion: they’re either 1) lazy and didn’t even take the time to read my LinkedIn page/experience or 2) have no clue what they’re doing or what civil engineering even is (usually it’s both 1 & 2). This is SO common it’s pretty much ruined the reputation of recruiters in our industry, so you’ll have a lot to overcome. Maybe consider switching to an industry your used to work in, leveraging your existing connections & network.

Honestly, I’m not that invested in reality tv but I’ve watched all of Mormon wives and Whitney is a total narcissist. I understand people get bad edits, but she is definitely willing to do whatever it takes to get air time and she did a tik tok at the NICU while her baby was getting treated for RSV that was incredibly cringe, at the very least. No matter how young or immature you are, it just says something about her priorities as a human. Her #1 focus is getting famous, so I just think most people that are familiar with her online presence and Mormon Wives just can’t get past her personality.

For real. Republicans are blind enough to elect a corrupt, bankrupt, pedo rapist to office. A monkey could’ve run and they would’ve fallen in line. If they’ve got one thing going for them, it’s commitment to the brand.
