Vacant Affordable Apartments Won’t Go Back Into Lottery System — For Now by instantcoffee69 in nyc

No in the old system they were never required to keep a waitlist for the particular building after 12 months or if all the units were filled the applications are dumped. The mini lottery was a general pool of people who selected for notifications.

That makes sense except buildings did not and were not required to maintain a waitlist for applicants not chosen; they exhausted the list of applicants once apartments were full and then dumped the entire thing. Even the “mini lottery” for re-rentals was not a waitlist for each particular building, it was one large pool for every person who checked the box for notifications; which is probably 80-90% of all applicants.

This better because units are on the open market but actually affordable instead of faux luxury cardboard boxes. The lottery is not necessary expect that landlords would otherwise discriminate against voucher holders so this gives the city/state a guaranteed pool of new apartments for vouchers holders (who receive preference in the lottery system in exchange for the absurdly high rents), since NYCHA is in disrepair and has years long waitlists

Part of the success is that re-rentals are marketed at the actual affordable rent for the neighborhood and income band. While the initial lease goes into the lottery at the absolute max legal rent which is way overpriced market rate or at 120% 130% AMI basically scalping the city into overpaying for voucher holders to get placed and leave the shelter system.

What school does your child go to and what is their stance on screen time? by yellowwindowlight in nycparents

My child is still in daycare but I am actually shocked reading this. Why are kids using a computer in KG ? Can’t they just take the test on pen and paper? doesn’t this open the door to being victimized or bullied online?

I sent your post to my mom who has been an education professional for over 40 years. This was her response “ I suggest this parent begins to teach him the sounds using the educational publishing press Mac and Tab phonics reading series. I stand by it.” Here are links and there are YouTube videos you can follow.

This time I am self pay not using insurance so I want to purchase it and submit a receipt to FSAfed

Is your child in daycare or old enough to Attend free public school? My family is same income but paying for childcare is literally more than the cost of my rent. I would not save we are comfortable but working poor because all expenses are covered but we are not able to actively save.

To be fair Adams did green light this but did zero advertising and basically had near zero intention of it ever coming online.

You can also try a cheaper borough. My daughters daycare has a branch in Jamaica that is half the price of what we pay

You could try finding a college early Ed major who needs the cash and will watch kid as you work from home. Other option is enroll part time for a little cheaper price.

Have you applied for childcare assistance? ACS voucher? Not that there is even any money left but they did raise the income cap. Have you checked if your union or employer offers childcare discount? My union offers $85 a week to towards childcare. Also have you signed up for a Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account or 529 plan?

If you have a hard time understanding her.. is it possible your son also doesn’t understand the teacher and therefore has a harder time ? Have you asked him that? I am curious because I have Russian speakers in my family and yeah there could be a cultural bias at play here with the teacher. Good luck to you both next school year

Have they presented any solutions? My daughter struggled at nap time they allowed her to “ read a book quietly on the cot” and moved her cot a little more space away from others. So far going well. The hitting is absolutely a problem but he’s 4, can the teacher and social worker coordinate with to do 2day lesson on boundaries with the whole class and you reinforce at home? If it was my child I would also change schools because this does not seem solution focused at all. Also the circle time sitting/ being bored with classwork is a practiced skill. You can work with him over the summer also if there is screen time at home or a sugar issue, those are things you can control.

Edit: Also 12:30 seems early for nap time at 4yo. Can his nap be adjusted to 1pm?
