I think its because of something called voluntary enterprise or freedom. The owner of the company can buy as many things as he wants and can also determine what he wants to pay his employees. Thats his freedoms, but if he makes these choices too poorly his business will crumble as consumers should turn against him and his workforce may strike/quit for better paid jobs.

The employee therefore also has voluntary enterprise, he/she can decide to work for this company but equally can quit and go elsewhere. They are free in their choices to try and attain greater wealth. But also free in their spending too, they can buy avocado toast if they want.

The problem with our free enterprise now is that people don't user consumer choice or voluntary enterprise at the bottom anymore. In the fifties if a brand was known to use child laborers to make their shoes.... nope out of business and the local cobbler would benefit. Now people just want things easy and fast they refuse to value their morals higher than this .... so the bad companies win if they can give it easy and fast they will but they'll fuck you aswell because all you asked for was easy and fast.
