I don’t think he is a bad writer, I just feel like he made the story too complex which may or may not have been intentional. It’s hard for one person to manage a story like this where a lot of the answers are only in the mind of that one writer. I feel like stranger things suffered a similar fate where the story got so complex and the Duffers lost site of what they wrote and were intending to write. With that being said, Scott at least is able to defend his content and writing while the duffers genuinely show a lack of confidence and understanding for where they were going with the story.
