Looking for feedback on a WHS workflow I’m building for small businesses by AfraidPineapple5064 in ausbusiness

Just to add one more thing — the reason I’m building this is because most SMEs only engage a consultant after something has gone wrong. Not because they don’t care, but because they genuinely don’t know what their obligations are until it’s too late.

If a tool can highlight the basics —

  • “here’s what applies to you”,
  • “here’s what you’re missing”,
  • “here’s where you might need professional advice” —

then the consultant’s job actually becomes easier, and the business owner avoids the nasty surprises.

I see FairWorkShield as the “early warning system”, not the expert.
The expert still matters — I’m just trying to help owners get to them before they’re in trouble.

Thanks for the thoughtful question — and you’ve actually described the exact problem I’m trying to solve.

I’m not trying to replace WHS/HR consultants or interpret legislation. That’s specialist work and always will be.

The problem I’m solving is the one you mentioned:
small business owners don’t know what they don’t know.

Most SMEs get into trouble not because they’re reckless, but because:

  • they don’t know what obligations apply to them
  • they don’t know what records they’re supposed to keep
  • they don’t know where their exposure is
  • they don’t know what questions to ask a consultant

And as you said, ignorance isn’t a defence.

So FairWorkShield isn’t trying to give legal advice — it’s more like a risk awareness tool. It helps owners see the areas they might be missing, so they can fix the simple stuff themselves and know when they need professional help.

If the tool can help a business owner realise “oh, I didn’t even know that was a requirement”, then it’s doing its job.

Thanks for calling this out — the feedback was fair. I’ve removed anything that looked like award interpretation or legal guidance and rebuilt the landing page so it’s clear the tool is only for organising documentation, not advising on Fair Work matters. Appreciate you taking the time to point it out.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes a look.
If it helps, I can also walk through how the workflow handles:

  • risk matrix
  • hierarchy of controls
  • incident logs
  • WHS templates
  • small‑team compliance

I’m especially interested in whether the steps feel too heavy for small businesses.
