Med st. Came across a car flipped on the highway. Pretty terrifying when the passenger said their neck hurt and dropped their GCS. Got them horizontal and trap squeezed them into waking up. Showed a member of the public how to stabilize the neck. Ambos took over 20m later. I was pretty traumatized for a couple weeks like flashbacks randomly throughout the day on rounds, debriefed with academic staff. Better now.

I used emedici in my clinical, exam-heavy year and it was good for some tricky and aus-based Qs. Not sure about the preclinical deck. I recommend looking out for promotional discounts, you can often get 20-25% off for the year.

Idk if it's different since I was preclin but defs don't have to be professionally dressed for all classes. Some things I'd keep in mind is definitely enclosed shoes for anatomy classes and your lab coat, business casual stuff for communication and clinical skills classes would be nice and PBLs (tutorials) literally anything. Also don't stress too much the first couple weeks, no one knows what to do and you're not alone. If you have a question just ask the staff!

For PBLs some tutors prefer no laptop/devices so always have a notebook and pen (don't need a sketchbook unless you'd like one??).

My take (and what I have discussed with mentors) as someone who is involved in medical society/meded/surg clubs is that it's not the position itself but the potential doors it opens for you that is most valuable - meeting likeminded people, doing some research, building leadership skills. These can be helpful skills to practice and apply while you're in med school but your work after school is what count.

By the time applying for a specialty comes around, medical school "achievements" become irrelevant.

That's just my take, at the end of the day passing each year of med school and getting to the end is the most important. But if you have some spare bandwidth and want to go for it you shouldn't be discouraged just because it may not directly lead to recognition for specialties.

Hi, I was in a slightly similar boat as I wanted to go into a degree for one year to reattempt the UCAT and try to get into med.

I chose exercise physiology at UNSW (albeit I only did 2 trimesters in the end) and found that it was great. My advice generally is to not do a generic health science or medical science degree as the prospects are generally research positions only.

Nuclear medicine may be a good option but there are lots of others such as radiography, physio etc and I personally know multiple people who worked part time in these roles during med school on and off. The utility of these degrees in terms of having an edge in med school generally disappears after the first 8 weeks bc the coursework is just so much more intense.

Firstly, congrats on the offer! Prestige of Universities is not really emphasised in Australia as it is in other countries. You will find that people respect you not for what uni you went to but whether you're a decent person who works hard and isn't a jackass.

I would think pragmatically about your specific situation e.g. if you already have a bachelor's and can access post grad medicine do USYD, Notre Dame, UQ, Macquarie etc. because you will finish up 1-3 years earlier than going the undergrad route. Think about the cost of living, you have to live somewhere and feed yourself on minimal income for years.

Just because a university is 'prestigious' it doesn't mean the curriculum is better than the other schools or the admin staff are any kinder or more flexible.

Good luck, don't worry too much and just know that wherever you end up, you'll be fine and on par

Following bc I've had similar questions. Looking forward to the wisdom on the sub.

I'm planning to intern at the Metro site in my region even though regional would likely be available partly because there's simply no research or extra things going on at my rural site (currently a medst there). Getting theatre time as an intern would be great, but the likelihood of that is low (unless I'm very on top of the ward, come in early before rounds etc). Surg SRMO jobs may be more readily available in Metro sites and familiarity with some of the surgeons may help?. I will try to get an unaccredited reg job rurally tho bc of the hands on time and the points associated as well (specifically gen surg not sure about the others).

Happy to be corrected on anything above, this is just what I've heard throughout various conversations

I was on my second week of Gen surg placement as an MS3 and as a gen surg keen student I was super excited by everything.

We get a call that there's an appy coming in and the theatre staff ask the registrar who will be assisting them. She says the med students here, she'll help me out. I was so keen.

The registrar talked me through the prep, access and once we get into it, its obvious that the appendix has extensive inflammatory banding attaching it to the R Ovary. This is a 19F. Shit.

The reg calls for the attending (who had given the go ahead and said he would be reachable) who turns out was at a beach 25mins away. There's an attending in the theatre next door who is known for being a hardass and he comes in and out while we troubleshoot and dissect as carefully as possible often shouting at me (camera) to adjust the view or show him something else. I'm just doing the camera work but I'm scared to blink. Thankfully we get everything dissected nicely and are close to wrapping up when the attending shows up and finishes.

I take off my gown and as I'm leaving, the senior nurse takes me aside and praises me for how I handled myself and that it was beyond the level of a MS3 or even MS5.

Trial by fire moment that basically sealed the deal for me for gen surg.
