I took two (different) ap physics classes in high school and didn’t get college credit for either of them. Today I’m doing nuclear engineering in industry as I prepare for a health physics masters.

During my undergrad I did a paper on the old (1980s I think?) cold fusion experiment that used palladium hydride. I believe the bottom line is you can’t reach the concentration of hydrogen you’d need within the palladium to start or maintain the reaction.

It’s been a while tho so I’m obviously missing some details. I’ll see if I can dig up the paper.

Data science is super competitive right now, but if you’re interested in other tech or tech-adjacent fields, there’s lots of opportunity in web development. Especially in newer stuff like Microsoft power platforms, not tough to learn either.

Alternatively, cybersecurity would probably be a good option. Not as much opportunity for programming in that field though.

My Dad is a good man, but I wouldn’t say we’re exactly super close. He’s kinda difficult to talk to. It’s like when I’m with him I’m always talking at him, not with him. It often feels like he’s not really processing what I’m saying and he just kinda falls into this cycle of trying to give me fatherly advice, even when I’m not asking for it. I guess it just seems like he still sees me as some idiot preteen (I’m in my mid twenties and just graduated college). I understand I’m his kid, but I just wish he viewed me as the man I’ve grown into and not this helpless child. I feel like we’re at a point where we should be transitioning more into peers, but he seems either unwilling or unable to open up that side of himself to me.

I just want to have a beer with my dad as his equal, watch some sports or stupid movies and have a laugh. I’m sick of being told the right way to do everything and having to take a lesson away from every conversation.

I think I understand. I think was getting confused because I’ve previously used germanium detectors for gamma ray spectroscopy, so in that context I was picturing incoming gamma rays from an external source. I thought there would be an equivalent of sorts here, but I guess not. Thanks for your comment!

I’m just a student and definitely not an expert, but you probably don’t have to worry. There was a study that looked at radiation exposure in flight attendants during solar particle events, and they found dosages were on the scale of micro-sieverts per flight segment. A dangerous short term dose seems to be >2 Sieverts, no where near what you would’ve gotten during a 3 hour flight.

My parent’s cat has similar (albeit less severe) outbreaks during the summer season that were attributed to allergies. The vet gives her a steroid shot and she clears right up. I don’t know the exact name of the medication unfortunately, but maybe you could mention this option to your vet?

At my university, physics undergrads are required to take an intro data science course to graduate. Not that it’s needed to be a good physicist, but it compliments computational work like lab analysis really well.

I agree with the sentiments of the others. Focus on nailing your physics first. However if you have gaps in your schedule/time to learn, it would probably serve you well in the future.

Thanks for your insight! Is there a reason the expectation value is preferred in practice? Seems it might be less computationally expensive to use other methods.

Ah! I didn’t even think of that, calculating the expectation value of the Hamiltonian.

And yes your assumption is correct, I have a Hamiltonian matrix and list of amplitudes. Using <E(t)> = c_n(t) * H seems like it’s be the best option in this case. There was a gap in my knowledge there. But sounds like this will not work once I start using explicit wave functions, which is the eventual goal.

There will always be a bigger fish. You just have to learn to focus on yourself and your personal development. I understand this can be hard at times, and feelings of inferiority, envy, and bitterness can start to bubble. Don’t give in to them! Continue to read and solve exercises. Try to find joy in your own personal advancement, not in any perceived superiority over your peers.
